"The Changing World of Drug Discovery and Development: Scientific Knowledge vs Pharma Riches and Ruins"

Dear MiNDS students & faculty,

I am pleased to invite you to attend the MiNDS Colloquium TODAY Thursday November 28th at 3:00 in HSC 4E20. Bring your coffee cup for coffee and cookies before the talk at 2:45.

Dr. John Andrews has ~30 years experience in industrial drug discovery and is President, CSO and co-founder of NeurAxon Inc. After completing his PhD in the UK and a post-doctoral research position at Emory University in the US, Dr Andrews moved into industry and worked for companies in the UK, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and the US before moving to Canada.

Prior to NeurAxon, Dr Andrews worked at a number pharma companies including Schering AG, Organon and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Pharmaceutica) in which he has held various positions from Section Head to VP CNS Drug Discovery and was former President at Descartes Therapeutics. Over his career, Dr Andrews has managed multiple drug projects including several novel therapeutic targets many of which entered clinical trials or achieved registration in areas such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and pain including abecarnil, mirtazapine and asenapine; NeurAxon currently has two first-in-class nNOS inhibitors in clinical trials.

John has a continuous publication record in CNS drug discovery with numerous patents and applications in drug discovery and implementation. In addition to NeurAxon he has also co-founded two other companies, Ketogen Inc, working on treatment resistant epilepsy and Talon Pharmaceutical Services Inc developing novel treatments for rarer neurological disorders. Dr Andrews is also currently acting as CEO of Kanata Chemical Technologies Corp and sits on the Board or Scientific Advisory Boards and Councils of several companies and organisations as well as the industrial advisory board of the Ontario Brain Institute.

His talk will focus on the changing face of drug discovery and development in the modern world; the difficulties in translational medicine and the demands of regulatory bodies and the wishes of patients and clinicians. We will consider the many different components of drug discovery and development, the associated time and costs and the type of background and qualifications required both in the past and the future. The interaction of basic science with the ability to implement that knowledge to the benefit of patients and society in general and the future of academic, institutional and industrial co-operation.

We look forward to seeing you all at the talk today.

Regards

Kathy
