"From blobs to networks: fMRI applications to understanding memory in the context of medial temporal lobe damage"

Dear MiNDS students & faculty,

I am pleased to invite you to attend the MiNDS Colloquium TODAY Thursday February 14th at 3:00 in PC 155. Bring your coffee cup for coffee and cookies before the talk at 2:45.

Dr Mary Pat McAndrews is a clinical neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist. She is the Director of the Neuropsychology Clinic and Senior Scientist at the Toronto Western Hospital and Research Institute, University Health Network and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Toronto.

Dr McAndrews' research focuses on memory networks, using functional neuroimaging, studies of patients with medial temporal lobe damage, and brain stimulation techniques to understand how these networks are organized and modified by focal damage or therapies. An essential goal is translating findings from cognitive neuroscience research into clinical practice.

Her talk will discuss some of her recent work using fMRI to identify effective memory networks in the context of damage to the medial temporal lobes - specifically in unilateral Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment. In that context, she will discuss the types of translational questions fMRI is suited to address (e.g., functional adequacy and functional reserve, plasticity) and different strategies/metrics that can be used (e.g., networks and variability of activation).

We look forward to seeing you all at the talk today.

Regards

Kathy
