"Neuroimaging Self-Esteem & Self-related Disorder"

Dear MiNDS students & faculty,

I am pleased to invite you to attend the MiNDS Colloquium TODAY Thursday October 25th at 3:00 in HSC 4E20. Bring your coffee cup for coffee and cookies before the talk at 2:45.

Dr. Paul Frewen joined the departments of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in September 2008. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology at Western and his post-doctoral residency at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. He is past-chair of the Traumatic Stress Section of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). He received the President's Early Research Award from the CPA in 2010, and the UWO Department of Psychiatry Faculty Research Award in 2012.

Dr Frewen has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles on the subjects of trauma, affect regulation, mindfulness, dissociation, and the self, primarily utilizing functional neuroimaging, experimental social cognition, and psychometrics approaches. His text, "Healing the Traumatized Self: Consciousness, Neuroscience & Treatment", co-authored with Dr. R. Lanius, will be published in 2013.

Dr Frewen's talk about understanding the neural bases of our sense of having and being a 'self' is of significant interest to both clinical and cognitive neuroscience. Neuroimaging studies implicate the medial prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, precuneus, and temporoparietal cortex in mediating self-reflective thought, although still little is known about the neural bases mediating individual differences in positive versus negative thinking about oneself. The talk will overview recent investigations into the neural bases of both adaptive-resilient and maladaptive-disordered senses of self in healthy participants and those with trauma-related psychiatric disorders.

We look forward to seeing you all at the talk today.

Regards

Kathy
