Conservation Land at risk! Send your comments today Mon., July 8th!
More than 434,000 acres of public conservation land are being disputed in South Florida Water Management District's (SFWMD) latest land assessment. Some of these lands provide critical habitat to endangered species, including the Woodstork, the Florida Panther and the Snail Kite. Because the entire Everglades Projects Area is up for review, these valuable conservation lands will be assessed for retention, disposal or alternate uses. We urgently need you to tell the SFWMD that we want those lands retained for the Conservation and Restoration of America's Everglades. Let the SFWMD know that you understand the value open land, and that you believe it is critical for us to restore the Everglades for the future of our water supply, for the future of our tourism economy, and for the quality of life of our children. Without your input, we will lose valuable lands for Everglades Restoration and wildlife habitat. Please take immediate action and submit your comments before the July 8 deadline. For more information, please review Audubon's comments. You may submit your comments directly to Andrea Schluter at aschlut@sfwmd.gov Please read the Miami Herald's article on this issue.

Support CEPP: Everglades Restoration & your Future Water Supply are at stake!
Wed., July 11 | 3301 Gun Club Road | 9:30 a.m.
Tell the South Florida Water Management Distric (SFWMD) Governing Board you want a restored Everglades! Urge them to: support the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP); agree to act as the local agency sponsor; and provide a draft Project Implementation Report for public review.
Please attend this meeting and express your support of CEPP. This will be the Final Vote needed to move forward with the Restoration of America's Everglades! Without the Governing Board's final approval, restoration will be set back for years and the environment simply can't survive that. Failure to act quickly could also preclude the opportunity for Congressional approval of this project for years to come. The Everglades NEED MORE WATER NOW! We have no time to waste.

Chill Out with TAS Free Summer Film Series: "Carbon Nation"
Thurs., July 18 | 5530 Sunset Dr | 8 p.m.
Chill out with Tropical Audubon Society on July 18th, feed your mind and learn about refreshing solutions to Climate Change!
TAS is hosting a special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary "Carbon Nation," which explores solutions to climate change, and illustrates why it's incredibly smart to be a part of the new, low-carbon economy. Lowering carbon output is simply good business: it emboldens national and energy security; and it improves health and the environment.
With the President's latest Call to Action on Climate Change, we believe this movie will inspire you to take action by holding our Elected Officials accountable to make Miami-Dade County a leader in solving Climate Change. Extreme weather comes at a high cost, and Carbon emissions are the #1 cause of Climate Change.
This film (86 min.) sheds light on how we can each reduce our personal and global carbon footprints.
R.S.V.P.: To better assure your seat, please kindly R.S.V.P. at events@tropicalaudubon.org & arrive on time. R.S.V.P. is not required, but much appreciated.
A donation BirdBar will provide liquid refreshment and popcorn will be on the house (in this case, the Doc Thomas House). See you on the 18th! Please share our flyer.

Port Everglades Expansion: Eyes Wide Open!
July 23| Broward County Convention Center| 1 and 7 p.m. Comments deadline: by August 13
As if plans to dredge and deepen the Miami Port are not enough, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) on the Expansion of Port Everglades, the busiest and largest port in South Florida.
Its proposed deepening from 42 to 48 feet will cost $313 million, with about two thirds of the cost paid with Federal and State tax dollars. This proposed dredging will decimate our already-sensitive coral reef populations. Please send your comments against dredging to Terri Jordan-Sellers.
There will be two identical public presentations on the project wherein stakeholders and members of the public are encouraged to participate and present their concerns to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Attendees will be required to show a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, for entrance into the port where the Convention Center is located.
Please a ttend this important meeting on July 23 and/or submit your comments by August 13. To read the complete EIS, please click here.
