A power company that wants to install 265 charging stations in eastern Washington state is asking state regulators to approve a two-year pilot program that would expand electric vehicle use in the region.

State lawmakers this week began discussing a measure that could make Washington the first state to tax residents and businesses on their carbon emissions. Under state law, Washington's legislators must either authorize the carbon tax themselves, or send it to a statewide vote in November.

Kia Motors introduced three 2017 model-year gasoline-electric hybrids, including the Optima Hybrid, Optima Plug-In Hybrid, and Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle, at the Chicago Auto Show. Kia is introducing the vehicles under its EcoDynamics sub-brand geared toward more environmentally friendly vehicles and includes the Soul EV.

UPS said this week it has expanded its agreement with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to use up to 500,000 gallon equivalents of renewable liquefied natural gas (RLNG) annually in Texas. "UPS's continuing commitment to new, clean vehicle fuel is helping to shape the future of transportation," said Harrison Clay, president of Clean Energy Renewables of Clean Energy.

Proterra battery-electric buses in service in a 12-vehicle demonstration by Foothill Transit in California offered significant fuel savings compared to similar conventional vehicles, according to a recently published analysis of the results of the demonstration by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
