Researchers Produce Two Biofuels From Single Algae

A common algae commercially grown to make fish food holds promise as a source for both biodiesel and jet fuel, according to a new study. The researchers, led by Greg O'Neil of Western Washington University and Chris Reddy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, exploited an unusual and untapped class of chemical compounds in the algae to synthesize two different fuel products, in parallel, from a single algae.

 

What A Jolt: Tesla's Sales In Bellevue Reach Staggering Level

Bellevue Square, the region's fourth-largest mall, made a splash last week when The Wall Street Journal reported that sales at the Tesla store hit a whopping $5,500 per square foot in January 2014. That's likely a U.S. record for any retailer, mall owner Kemper Development told the paper, and 10 times higher than at other malls with luxury tenants. 

 

Bi-Fuel Propane Autogas Ford P.I. Utility In Development

Vehicle modifier Blossman Services is developing a bi-fuel propane autogas Ford Police Interceptor Utility model that will be available to law enforcement agencies in the spring. The bi-fuel system conversion on the Interceptor requires no intake manifold drilling, cutting, or splicing of wiring. The conversion kit will offer an additional 21 gallons of useable fuel without compromising the vehicle's safety or operational benefits.

There is a growing rift between the bigger and more powerful vehicles consumers want to buy and the fuel-efficient vehicles the government wants automakers to make - and the disconnect was eye-poppingly evident at the just concluded auto show here. The crowds were deep around the 600-horsepower Ford GT and Acura NSX supercars, a 640-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V and the larger-than life Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram Rebel performance pickups.

 

EPA To Allow Argentine Biodiesel Imports Under RFS

The EPA has approved a policy change that will allow Argentinian biodiesel to qualify under the Renewable Fuel Standard, a move that the National Biodiesel Board on Tuesday said would compromise the policy's goal of providing "clean, homegrown" fuel. The change approves a request from the Argentine biodiesel industry that will allow the country to use an alternate tracking method for feedstocks used to produce biofuel.
