Music this Sunday
involves a little Handel organ music for me, and a bit of hymn singing for you. Next week, August 21, you will be treated to our 9:30 annual Outdoor Service. August 28 will feature Susan Gates singing songs by American composers, Connie Pawelczak playing a bit of Duke Ellington, and my batting cleanup with some Aaron Copland. September 4 will bring back Cyndi Bliss for one more round of subbing and then the choir season is upon us!

AUGUST is a Mysterious Month
at All Saints' 9:30am Service....
The SUMMER MYSTERY CLUB starts this SUNDAY!

mystery club The Summer Mystery Club is a fun program for all kids at the 9:30am service- everyone is invited.
The kids join Brian and me to work with a Detective from ACME Detective agency to follow clues and solve a mystery. Each week we catch the kids up on what has happened before, so it is no problem if they can't be here for all 4 Sundays. The mystery club meets right before the start of the 9:30am service and runs during the normal church school time. We will be meeting August 14th, 21st & 28th.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the Mystery Club- I can be reached by email at laura.marshall@comcast.net

Please RSVP with the names and ages of your children and the Sundays you think you might be there. Thank you!

Outdoor Service
Coming soon! Our annual outdoor service, ably led by musicians Matt Hickcox and Scott Bempkins, will be on August 21 at 9:30 a.m.

Singing And Ringing At All Saints'
As I reflect upon the start of the coming choir season, and the open invitation that exists for all in the parish to join one of our music groups, I think about a recent article that was published in the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians. The article is written by colleague and friend, Mark Howe, who is the cathedral organist in Burlington VT. His article speaks to the role of "traditioning" that can occur anywhere, but often occurs in music programs. Although Mark agrees that turning nouns into verbs can be awkward, traditioning is the process of handing on to the next generation some wisdom, or a practice, or a story, or some other non-material phenomenon. For me, the results of traditioning are astoundingly apparent in the B# Choir. If I ask them for their favorite anthems or hymns, they can rattle off a long list in an instant, and there are often surprises on this list - songs other than the easy listening/tried and true. We are creating musical memories and experiences that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
We also have many musical traditions that are carried on throughout the year. My personal favorite is our Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols, which is traditionally on the Sunday afternoon of Advent 2, which will be December 11 this year. We also sing the same hymns on Christmas eve and at Easter, because straying from this tradition afflicts the comforted, and these are two services where we honor this desire.
As I mentioned last week, Thursdays are music nights at All Saints' - another tradition that has been in place for a long time. We welcome new members to ring or sing, so that we can maintain and enhance our music offered to the glory of God.

Father Above, make each of us a sanctuary for Christ in the world. Direct the works of our hands, the words from our lips, and the prayers that we pray.  Bless our Living Stones campaign that as we give out of our abundance to make improvements to your House, your Spirit will renew us as a community of praise and service, united to one another and to the world you love in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

When: Sunday, August 21st, 2016
Where: ASC Gardens and Lawn
Time: After the 9:30 OUTDOOR Service
All Saints' Garden
What better way to celebrate Summer and worshiping in our lovely gardens than to follow it up with flavored lemonades, iced teas and treats?  Please join us, play a few lawn games, catch up with parishioners you maybe haven't seen in a while (yes - God is ever present at the beach, shore, along the rivers and in the mountains) and enjoy a cold beverage and snack.

Thrift Shop Updates
Although our faithful volunteers get a summer break, a new group of hard working volunteers - Bob Camacho, Norm Douglas, and Frank Ouellette - is working to repair some water damage that has been going on for some time. The lower halves of the Thrift Shop walls have been removed, wet insulation thrown out, and now a lot of stone work repair is being done before the walls are put back up and new carpeting is installed. All of this work takes time, so we are delaying the opening of the Thrift Shop until October 1. More details will follow in coming weeks.
We are working on firming up our volunteer schedule, and there are some significant gaps that need filling, especially on Saturdays, and the 4th Thursday afternoon of the month. All shifts are 2.5 hours long, and volunteers are always paired with one or two additional people. The Thrift Shop has been in existence the late 50's, operates as a consignment store (50/50), and raises funds for All Saints' programs as well as assisting some Chelmsford programs. It is easy work with enjoyable people, and a great way to get clothes cheaply! Please speak to me if you are able to help in any way.
