From the Rector:
I invite you to attend a special forum this coming Sunday, February 28th, to hear Nancy Shippen, who is a facilitator with Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP). Nancy has been working for many years in our local jails and prisons with inmates who are looking for ways to transform the violence inside themselves and in their communities. I recently spent two days with Nancy as she led a group of 11 inmates at the Essex County jail in Middleton in the Basic AVP program.

AVP was designed in the 1970s by inmates and Quakers doing prison ministry in New York. The mission of AVP is "To empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation, and trust."

In his opening sermon in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus, quoting Isaiah 61, says
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free."

Not every Christian is called into prison ministry, but all the baptized are called to embody the good news of God in Christ to those trapped by violence and suffering.

Nancy will show a short video of AVP in prison and will share her experience of working with those who thought their lives were hopeless.

We'll begin right at 11:30 am (or a minute or two earlier). Nancy is also willing to stay beyond our usual ending time to answer questions.
Peace in Christ,
Bill

AVP, as their website says, is "A non-profit grassroots program of volunteers dedicated to reducing violence in ourselves and in our lives - our homes, schools, prisons, and communities. We seek to release everyone's inborn power to positively transform ourselves, and in so doing, begin to transform the world.

Musical Notes Music Staff
Music for Sunday continues in a Lenten mode.  Our handbells start us off with a Prelude in E minor, and the closing voluntary is based on the opening hymn, Wondrous love. The Parish Choir's anthem by John Rutter is a prayer translated from the Latin by Lancelot Andrews (1555-1626). Andrews acted as the general editor of the King James Bible, and it is said that he was responsible for more of its translation than any other scholar. Sunday's anthem has these words: Open thou mine eyes and I shall see: Incline my heart and I shall desire: Order my steps and I shall walk in the ways of thy commandments. O Lord God, be thou to me as a God and beside thee let there be none else, no other, naught else with thee. Vouchsafe to me to worship thee and serve thee, according to thy commandments -  in truth of spirit, in rev'rence of body, in blessing of lips, in private and public. The Disco Penguins will sing a simple piece about Jesus as our good shepherd, and will join the B# for a setting of psalm 121 by Malcolm Williamson - I will lift up mine eyes. This latter piece is one of our choir festival pieces, and is both abstract and complex, and has been a challenge for us.

A beautiful wall of stones graces our worship.  It speaks of love and commitment, of solidarity and sacrifice.  It promises endurance and encourages us to approach the altar in peace.  It reminds us of the world outside, the traditions of our ancestors, and the potential of future generations.  Bless us, O Lord, as we work towards Your promise for our parish through the Living Stones Capital Campaign.  Help us to acknowledge fear and uncertainty, step forward in faith together, and build on the success of our predecessors.  Be with us Lord, as we pledge to sustain this place, increase your work within us and unite us in Your purpose for this community.  Amen.

Want To Restore Your Faith?

While it seems to me that many have a rock solid faith, mine sometimes gets a little shaky. Yet each year when I come to the West Virginia workcamp, my faith is restored. Using my hands and skills to help fix homes for the people in need there always boosts my faith. And I know that many who go on the trip feel the same way. It doesn't take any special knowledge, just a willingness to help. You will be deeply rewarded for your work at workcamp.

Would you like to join us this year? Wonder what it's all about? Come join us for our first WV Workcamp meeting of 2016 at 7:00pm Sunday March 6th at 9 Worthen Street in Chelmsford(that's the White house next to Central Congregational Church) and we'll tell you all about it.
