A Note from Neenah-Menasha YMCA Executive Director Scott Schanhofer:
|
|
June is seen as the start of summer. We spend the winter longing for summer and the sights, sounds and feel of warm weather.
It is the month of June,
The month of leaves and roses,
When pleasant sights salute the eyes,
And pleasant scents the noses
---N.P. Willis, The Month of June.
I hope you take some time to enjoy the weather and all that is around you. We are truly blessed to live where we do and to share a community with wonderful and giving people.
God Bless,
Scott

QUARTERLY CUSTOMER SERVICE MEETING RECAP AND PARKING UPDATE
|
|
Thank you for those that were able to attend one of the two May Quarterly Customer Service Meetings on May 11th. We had a great conversation on "Is Your Customer Service Impressive and Magical". We also updated staff on the Parking Plan for W. North Water Street in front of the Y. The plan is to create a loading zone lane in front of the Y were the current 15 minute parking stalls are located. Across the street on the church side, there will be additional back-in angle parking with a 2-hour limit. Additionally, where the current 30 minute parking stalls are located will be exclusively handicapped parking. More information will be forthcoming with lobby displays, video and informational material to members. The parking plan is tentatively scheduled to be done in July.
We also recognized our latest Staff Champions: Claire Wollerman (Membership/Kids Corner) and Carrie Amers (Growth & Development).
Extra Mile Drawing Winners for $5 Café Gift Card - Kate Harrell (Wellness) & George Robles (Buiding Supervision)
Drawing Winners for $25 Neenah Downtown Gift Certificate - Jessica Englebretson (Childcare) & Darlene Sakale (Adult)
Congratulations All!

SUMMER SPRUCE UP SCHEDULE
THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN -
SPRUCIN' UP THE FACILITIES
|
|
Each year we concentrate on specific areas of our YMCA facility for sprucing up. This may take the form of deep cleaning, major repairs or renovations, general painting or floor maintenance. Many of these tasks are also done throughout the year, but during our spruce up schedule we will be closing these areas to our membership and general public. We ask for your assistance in explaining the closures to our members and guests. By asking them to avoid those areas we are ensuring their safety and allowing staff and others to work more efficiently on these spruce-up projects. Thank you for your help in these efforts.

Many of you might have taken the CPR training more than once since you started working for the Y. If you are interested in doing this, please talk with your supervisor to make arrangements for this training option.

Following are upcoming dates and times for trainings held at the Neenah-Menasha YMCA. Further information about training classes and dates can be obtained at the Member Services Desk. By Kate Harrell, MS, RD, CSSD, LD
Now that the sun is finally upon us, it's a perfect time to learn all about the "Sunshine" Vitamin - Vitamin D. Why is it called the sunshine vitamin? We can activate a precursor to vitamin D with exposure to sunlight. Please note, only a short period of time is needed for this process to occur - we want to avoid over exposure for optimal health. Many factors will influence this process including: season, time and length of day, cloud cover, smog, skin melanin content and sunscreen use. Age will also affect the skin's ability to make Vitamin D.
It's important we are able to produce vitamin D in this way, as food sources are fairly limited. Most of vitamin D food sources are fortified, such as: milk, yogurt, orange juice, margarines and cereals. Natural food sources include some fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna, cod liver oil and small amounts in eggs and liver.
Vitamin D has MANY functions in our body. Probably the most familiar, is bone health. Vitamin D increases calcium absorption in the gut and is also required for what is called bone remodeling. This process is happening all the time and is necessary for a strong, healthy skeleton over a lifetime. That is JUST the beginning...
We are learning that Vitamin D receptors are located ALL over the body - researchers are continually finding out more about the influence of vitamin D body-wide. Some of the additional functions of vitamin D include: promoting skeletal muscle health, immunity, cell growth, cancer prevention (associations with colon, prostate and breast cancers), assisting the inflammatory response & more!
Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with muscle weakness, muscle wasting and poor gait in older adults. In young females, adequate vitamin D status was related to muscle power and force, as well as jump height.
Last but not least, vitamin D may also influence mental health. Depression has been associated with low vitamin D status. Again, the vitamin D receptors are EVERYWHERE, including the brain and especially areas of the brain associated with depression.
Whew...that's a lot of benefits from one single nutrient. If you are concerned about your vitamin D status, it is best to get your vitamin D levels tested at your doctor's office. This is not typically a routine test, so you would need to ask. It is important to note that vitamin D is what is called a fat-soluble vitamin and can be stored. If it is overconsumed, such as with high levels of supplemental vitamin D, it can reach toxic levels. Therefore it is important to determine your vitamin D level before supplementing.
I hope you enjoyed learning about our wonderful sunshine vitamin D.
