A Note from Neenah-Menasha YMCA Executive Director Scott Schanhofer:
|
|
May means different things to different people but I like to embrace Mother's Day. It is an opportunity to elevate our Mothers with our love, gratitude and joy for that day. I hope that we also do that every day of the year but Mother's Day lets us center the entire day around our mother.
I recently was sent two quotes that I want to share:
All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to angel mother.
---Abraham Lincoln
Mother is the name of God in the lips and hearts of little children.
--William Makepeace Thackeray
Thank you to all the mothers who sacrifice so much for their children. Our world is so much better because of them.
God Bless,
Scott

We are proud of the work that is done here at the Neenah-Menasha YMCA thanks to our staff. Each month we would like to share our Y Mission Moments with you. Mission Moments are stories from members, participants or staff on how the Y has impacted them is some positive way. If you would like to share your Mission Moment with us, please submit in writing to your supervisor or to Brian Rammer (brammer@ymcafoxcities.org).
As parents, we are extremely fortunate to have a summer camp like Camp Tonkaweya where our children can go and be engaged in numerous activities each and every day. The choices they have for things to do seems almost endless. Each week they can choose to participate in a sport or specialty camp, or enjoy traditional "camp life" at Memorial Park. Not only are they being physically active each day, but they are being taught the four core values the Y is founded on. Respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring. These values are reinforced daily, and highlighted each afternoon when the kids who have demonstrated one or more of these values are recognized during the "bead ceremony".
What makes Camp Tonkaweya even more special, is the numerous counselors who run the camp each summer. They are amazing young adults who are fantastic role models for our kids. They are extremely creative, enthusiastic, and have an incredible amount of energy.
Camp "T" is unique and special in so many ways, and I am very grateful to have such a wonderful place for my kids to go to each summer.

YMCA OF THE FOX CITIES STAFF DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND GLOBAL COMMITTEE
|
|
The Staff Diversity, Inclusion and Global (DIG) Committee's focus is to be a conduit to DIG work at our branches and assist in moving our Association work forward. One of the ways we will be doing this is by providing you various articles, information and events related to Diversity, Inclusion and Global work in our Staff Newsletters. Our Staff DIG Committee members are: Paula Beyer, Melissa Quintanilla, Kevin Jakubek, Darlene Pawelkiewicz, Kourtney Kositzke, Sue Pawlowski, Brian Rammer, Judy Seibel & Tom Wendt.
Even if you are not a bookworm, consider reading What If?: Short Stories to Spark Diversity Dialogue, by Steve Long-Nguyen Robbins. It is a thought provoking book to create conversations around diversity. In the 26 chapters, the author tries to go over a wide range of diverse topics to make the reader think. This is a great read for a book club or for personal reflection.
In it he asks questions such as "What if....the world isn't as we think it is?" Or "What if...we could listen more and judge less?" or "What if...we could be more flexible and adaptable?" They are all great questions for the family as well.
Other good books on diversity:
Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People by Mahzarin R. Banaji
Reinventing Diversity by Howard J Ross
Everyday Bias by Howard Ross
The Loudest Duck by Laura A Liswood

Top 5 Reasons to See Our Dietitian Today
On the heels of National Nutrition Month and National Dietitian Day, it's a perfect time to visit some of the top reasons why a nutrition coaching session can be helpful for you or for our members. Nutrition is a great complement to other wellness services, helping them achieve greater results, which may thereby enhance motivation and retention.
Here are the top 5 reasons to encourage a dietitian visit today!
1. "I know what I am supposed to do but I just can't seem to do it." Dietitians are skilled in more than just the science of nutrition. Part of our coursework is in psychology and behavior change. We also embrace Motivational Interviewing techniques to truly listen and hear where the client is at. This allows us to individualize our approach. Personally, I love the challenge of finding the best fit for each client, what method, system, tool can help them achieve their goals and stay accountable to healthy changes for the duration versus the quick fix.
- Contrary to some beliefs, your Neenah-Menasha Dietitian Kate is a huge proponent of the Total Diet Approach, embracing the diet as a whole vs. a specific food restrictions or the notion of good food/bad food. Kate also embraces the interrelationship of food, exercise, stress management and well-being. Well-being includes being able to enjoy the foods you love while moderating your intake to support your goals.
2. "I've been working out for months but I'm not seeing any results." Your Neenah-Menasha Dietitian is also a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, teaches on the topic at UWO and personally employs sports nutrition strategies to achieve her own performance goals. Without the right diet and especially the right timing or quantity of calories and nutrients, you may not be seeing the results you are capable of achieving.
3. "I want to live a long life and be able to enjoy the journey." Nutrition holds significant power in being able to prolong our lives. Unfortunately, we are currently seeing how our poor nutrition habits are shortening our lifespan and greatly increasing rates of disease. Whether your goal is prevention or treatment, Kate is knowledgeable in chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer and obesity. Does your family carry a higher risk for any of these? Contact Kate today to build up your nutritional defense system so you can live long and prosper!
4. "I am training for my first (fill in the blank) and I have no idea what to eat to fuel my race." Just like nutrition is critical to achieving the results from your workouts, nutrition can truly make or break your performance in a race or event. Kate has a passion for sports nutrition and would love the opportunity to prepare an event-specific nutrition plan for you, for your children or for a group. You can achieve more in your next race or event!
5. "I am SOOOOOO confused." Whether it is supplements, or if eggs are IN or OUT, Kate is here to help apply the most current research and guidelines on your topic of choice. Let her help you sort out the myths and confusion that is so common with nutrition.
If you have specific sports nutrition questions, Kate Harrell is our onsite dietitian and is also a certified sports dietitian and avid distance runner. She also teaches sports nutrition at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Don't hesitate to contact Kate with questions about how to get started or to directly refer clients her way. Single session and package options are available for convenience of the member. Kath is available through email kharrell@ymcafoxcities.org or by calling 920.886.2122
