A Note from Neenah-Menasha YMCA Executive Director Scott Schanhofer

July is the month of independence. We celebrate our nation's independence with fireworks, parades and stirring speeches. Do you think about your independence? Not as an American but as a human being. Your ability to move, speak and do things for yourself and others. So many times we take for granted the blessings we have until they are gone. Take some time to celebrate the little things you can do. In your role at the YMCA, you are helping others to remain independent in so many ways. The senior who needs exercise to fight off the limitations of aging or the young parent who needs quality childcare so they can work or go to school. You make a difference as our members work to become and stay independent. Thank you for all that you do for them and for our community.

God Bless -

YMCA OF THE FOX CITIES

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

June 18, 2015

Dear YMCA of the Fox Cities Staff Team Members,

On Tuesday of this week, we held our public announcement of our Growing Stronger Together Capital Campaign efforts. I am hoping that you saw some of the extensive news coverage that we received as part of this exciting announcement.

Over the past year, teams from throughout the association have been working to share our story and raise funds from our Inner Family and Major Gift prospects. (Thank you to those who have made a gift to this campaign effort.) I am happy to report that we have secured $7.1 million towards our overall goal of $9 million.

It is now time to share this opportunity with our Y members and the greater community. You will see graphics and project displays in each of our lobby areas and we will be providing vision tours and hosting informational sessions at each of our facilities.

Our Growing Stronger Together Capital Campaign and subsequent facility renovations and expansions are a direct result of the unprecedented growth we have seen in our membership and program participation over the past several years.

I have attached some "talking points" that will provide you additional information on our campaign plans and timeline.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions, thoughts or concerns.

Sincerely,

William R. Breider III

President / CEO

Neenah-Menasha YMCA construction project total is $1.1 million

The Neenah-Menasha YMCA has experienced steady growth in membership, recently breaking an all-time high branch record. In order to ensure that our facilities offer what the community wants and needs, the Neenah-Menasha YMCA's plan for improvement is as follows:

  • Locker room renovations that will provide families and seniors more accessibility
  • A complete renovation and relocation for Adventure Alley
  • Wellness Equipment Upgrades

FOR GLOBAL GOOD -

YMCA WORLD SERVICE

The mission and reach of the YMCA goes far beyond our Fox Cities' community. The YMCA is one of the largest social service organizations in the world, and has a presence in 119 countries - often existing in challenging social, economic and political environments. Y programming is uniquely developed to have the most impact in each community it serves and gives men, women and children the tools and resources to create a better future for themselves and their families.

As the YMCA of the Fox Cities family, we strive to provide opportunities for others around the world and further the YMCA movement. Here are a few ways we provide impact through our world service efforts.

*        Mexico City YMCA - Camohmila School: We provide funding so students not only receive an education, but room and board, medical and dental care, and support counseling during the school week.

*        International Camp Counselors - Camp Nan A Bo Sho: We give two international college students an opportunity to work at camp for the summer. In turn they provide meaningful cultural experiences and learning opportunities for young campers in northeast Wisconsin.

*        Sioux/Lakota YMCA: This tribal YMCA is in our country, but faces some of the greatest challenges to serve their community. Support provided for after-school programs, summer camp, computer classes, and summer lunch programs impacts young Lakota students on South Dakota tribal reservations.

Each year we have the opportunity to celebrate our global relationships with our supportive donors and Y family at the Fox Cities World Service Luncheon, taking place this summer on Monday, July 13, at the Appleton YMCA. To learn more, or if you would like to support our efforts, please join us for this luncheon by contacting Tom Wendt at twendt@ymcafoxcities.org or 920.954-7619. I encourage you to learn more about the global family you are part of by visiting www.ymca.net/world-service.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

If you find your energy and enthusiasm flagging as you're preparing for your annual summer yard sale, consider this observation from E. B. White (yes, he's the fellow who wrote Charlotte's Web, among other classics). It's the last paragraph in his essay about vacating an apartment in New York City where he and his wife had lived for a long time. It was written in 1935 and suggests that lightening your load of worldly goods may have benefits apart from just adding a few extra dollars to your bank account.

Possessions breed like mice. A man forgets what a raft of irrelevant junk he has collected about him till he tries to move it. We found ourself one afternoon smothered at the bottom of a pile of ghastly miscellany: envelopes engraved with the wrong address, snapshots that had never been pasted up, a mahogany chip belonging to a broken chair, some high-school examination papers, a can of ski wax, several programs of the Millrose games, a sneaker for the left foot, a build-it-yourself airplane that had never been built, some samples of curtain material, a catcher's mitt, a red-and-silver ashtray made from the head of a piston. These objects suddenly seemed to be the possessor, ourself the possessed. An hour later we were wandering dully in the streets seeking lodging in a hotel and passed a little old fellow with all his worldly goods slung on his back in a burlap sack. In his face was written a strange peace.

SUMMER SPRUCE UP SCHEDULE

THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN - SPRUCIN' UP THE FACILITIES

Each year we concentrate on specific areas of our YMCA facility for sprucing up. This may take the form of deep cleaning, major repairs or renovations, general painting or floor maintenance. Many of these tasks are also done throughout the year, but during our spruce up schedule we will be closing these areas to our membership and general public. We ask for your assistance in explaining the closures to our members and guests. By asking them to avoid those areas we are ensuring their safety and allowing staff and others to work more efficiently on these spruce-up projects. Thank you for your help in these efforts.
