From the desk of:

Brenda Johnson

FWY Executive Director

Each year, we eagerly await summer's arrival. When you were a kid, summer activities were a great escape. You were completely free. Fun was your only endgame.

Your interests have probably evolved since you were a kid, but that doesn't mean what you did as a kid isn't still fun. When was the last time you spent an afternoon floating on an inflatable raft, swinging in a hammock or lying on a blanket in the grass reading a book?

If your answer is "I just took a day off last week," but all you did was run errands or clean the house, that doesn't count.

The first step is to carve out some time for fun. Make weekends sacred by setting good boundaries: turn off email on Friday afternoon and leave it off until Monday morning; turn off your smartphone at least one hour each weekend day; be okay to say no to some requests. The second step is to plan some activities.

The following ideas may help get you started:

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town. When you live somewhere long enough, it becomes the area where you buy groceries and get your car serviced. This summer, treat your hometown like a new-to-you destination. Check out www.foxcities.org for a list of ideas!

Take a Mini-Vacation in your Backyard. Take a Friday night and camp in your backyard. Pitch a tent, build a fire, roast some smores.

Plan an Outdoor Neighborhood Movie Night. Rent a movie projector, tack a sheet on the side or front of the garage, spread out some blankets and pillows, string some lights, set out some popcorn and snacks and watch a movie under the stars.

Whatever you decide to do have fun, because the best days of summer will be here (and gone) before you know it!

Take a Friday night and camp in your backyard. Pitch a tent, build a fire, roast some smores.

Yours in Service,

Brenda

40 Days of Giving -

Vote for the YMCA of the Fox Cities!

SVA, in Appleton, is celebrating 40 years in business and 40 years of supporting the community with SVA's 40 Days of Giving Contest. Dean Hunt, Business Development Manager for SVA, and YMCA of the Fox Cities member & volunteer, brought the giving contest to our Y leadership team. Non-profit agencies were able to submit a project to SVA for consideration.  SVA will provide 40 days of volunteer time, to complete the project, to 4 winners of their contest. They received 33 entries and you can help choose the top 10!

We submitted the following:

YMCA of The Fox Cities
Looking for: Creation of a video to showcase our services
The YMCA of the Fox Cities is a unique organization made up of 5 branches & an overnight camp. The Y offers over 500 programs & services to 160,000 community members no matter age, gender, race or ability. It is because of the number & variety of programs we offer at locations, off-site at senior centers, schools & our overnight camp 3 hours away, that we would benefit from additional resources such as a video to help tell our story & promote the impact we have on our community. The creation of a video would help us showcase our services and commitment to the community.

We're hoping you will consider voting for the YMCA of the Fox Cities.  You can vote daily and you can pass the following link along to family, friends, neighbors, colleagues.

Vote here!
http://www.sva.com/40days/entries

Voting ends August 26, 2014. SVA will announce the top 4 winners on September 10, 2014.
Thank you for voting for the Y!

Now Showing: My Y Story!

Staff Champions

  Maureen Kiser
This gem has been a member of our Member Services department for the past 6 years!  She has a great eye for detail and is an excellent proof reader if you need one!  She is a mainstay at our front desk three days a week.  Her demeanor is quiet at first, but once you get to know her, she will tell you exactly what she thinks!  We love that about her.  She has helped many other staff learn this exciting job of member services.

Maureen Kiser has a warm heart, a well-developed creative side, and a strong desire to do things right and to help out however she can. She is a very important part of our staff!

Damon Salm
While only in high school Damon has been a vital part of our Aquatic Team.  As a lifeguard and swim instructor he is consistently complimented on his hard work.  He is always willing to take on more responsibilities.  Most recently, he has taken on the role of helping new lifeguards become familiar with all shift procedures.  He has come in on days when he is not scheduled to work just to make sure a new staff is comfortable with their responsibilities.

One thing that impresses me about Damon, especially for his age, is his ability to go with the flow and take on any bumps in the road without it really letting it affect his work or attitude.  He is definitely a staff champion and instrumental to our successful aquatic team!

Jen Baum

Jen Baum has been with the Fox West Y for just over two years but she fits in as though she has grown up here. Her highly contagious energy brings excitement to any class and boy do the class participants love her. She can teach anything and loves learning more. She truly has a passion for helping members and staff with their wellness and exercise goals. We are so thankful to have her as part of our fitness team.
