YMCA Annual Campaign

(formerly known as Strong Kids)

The Annual Campaign is moving along and we have received some great support from our staff, Board of Directors and the community. We will be campaigning through the end of April or until we reach our branch goal of $449,000, whichever comes first! Our staff goal is $31,000 and I'm excited to report that we are very close to achieving our goal. We ask that you consider participating in any amount to help us reach our goal. It will take all of our efforts to raise enough to serve our community throughout 2014. If you have not yet made a pledge or contribution, please consider a gift to this worthy cause!! Payroll deduct is available, please see your supervisor or Jodi Lindquist for the paperwork! (A contribution of one hour of pay per month qualifies you for casual Fridays where you can wear jeans.)

Maintenance Requests

If you (or members) find that there is equipment or areas that need to have repair please fill out lime green Work/Repair Request (located at the Lower Lobby and in the copier room behind the Member Services desk) and give to your Department Supervisor.

If it is an area that needs to be closed because of safety - do so and immediately let your Department Supervisor know via phone call. Please post an Out of Order sign on the item. Out of Order signs are located behind in the copier room behind the Member Services Desk.

The Department Supervisor (Director or Coordinator) will email Mike McGuire and follow through on the request until it is completed. Please do not write requests down on scraps of paper as they will not be documented properly and not completed timely.

Staff Member Hub (Appleton YMCA and YMCA Child Learning Center Programs)

Please keep your supervisor up-to-date with your current email. Each department has a Hub which provides pertinent information, trainings, newsletters, internal changes and service reminders.

Parking Challenges

Please be reminded of the parking designations around the building. The front of the building is 5 minutes for drop off and pick up, the surface lot across the street is 10 minutes drop off and pick up 8:00 am - 6:00 pm and the ramp is 3 hour limit 8:00 am - 6:00 pm.

As staff members working longer than 3 hours please be sure to display your employee parking pass properly in the left side of your rear window. Please see Char in Member Services if you do not have an employee parking pass.

The front of the building is very congested from 8:15 am - 9:00 am and 11:00 - 11:45 am with the coming and goings of Preschool, 4K and Y class participants. Please make sure that you avoid using these two areas during this time. If you have to pick up and drop off please stay to the time limits as staff tend to get side tracked and be out there longer. The City of Appleton has also been enforcing the time limits to move folks who habitually stay much longer. For the 2014- 2015 school year the 4K rooms will have a staggered start and end time so that we can ease some of the congestion for parents and participants.

YMCA Youth in Government

In early February, Jolene Leurquin, Youth in Government Advisor had the opportunity to take 33 delegates from the Fox Cities Youth in Government program to Madison for the 57th Model Government session. The YMCA Youth in Government 33 delegates and their advisor were amazing to see in action as they took over the capitol in Madison, for their Model Government weekend. This is Youth in Governments "Super Bowl" so to speak.

We had a number of our local YMCA delegates who served as our Youth in Government Officers for the gathering of YMCA Wisconsin delegates:

President of the Senate was Sam Allen

Chief Clerk of the Senate was Jenny Detjen

Floor Leader of the Blue Assembly was Saul Roselaar

Reading Clerk of the Blue Assembly was Andrew Duncombe

Speaker of the Red Assembly was Caroline Duncombe

Press Corps. Editor in Chief was and remains Molly Brennan

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was Emme Reab

Out of the 25 statewide nominations to the National YIG Conference 7 of our delegates received nominations. It truly was an amazing experience and our YMCA delegates did a fantastic job representing not only themselves but also the YMCA of the Fox Cities!

Also a special thank you to the additional advisors that helped out at Model Government Weekend: Chad Hernandez, Ted Balser, and Jessie Vandenhoy.

Swim Team Update from Coaches Angela and Jess

During the past several months FCY swim team members have been very busy and we wanted to share an update.

On January 24-26 FCY loaded a bus, a few large vehicles and drove 70 parents, siblings and athletes to the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, IN at the IUPUI Pool which is considered the fastest pool in the nation.  We had 32 athletes that participated in the meet.  This is a prestigious meet which draws teams from Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and even Colorado. FCY was one of only two Wisconsin teams that was invited to the meet.    We had a number of athletes make it into finals, individuals  Andrea Bryson, Jarod VerBoort, Gabby Mullally, Hannah Blob, Melissa Klaeser, and Lexi Monty.  We also had Melissa Klaeser make her first ever state cut!  We traveled and cheered as a team.  The host team enjoyed our spirit so much that we have already been invited back for next January.

The next weekend we attended a three day A+ meet in Brown Deer where our athletes had the pleasure and challenge of racing against some of the top athletes in the country including 14 year old Michael Andrews who is the youngest athlete to ever turn professional.

February 8th and 9th we worked with our fellow YMCA team the OSHY Dolphins to cohost the Winter Open.   It was a 4 day meet with 810 athletes from around the state.  Again, we had a lot of team spirit and cheered on two more athletes to brand new, first time ever state cuts: Leah Armstrong & Ben Todd.  The team also showed great strength and support for their fellow athletes by cheering on and shaking hands with their competitors.  Our athletes show wonderful sportsmanship in and out of the pool.

To round out our third busy week- on Tuesday, February 11 we hosted our Team Picture Night followed by our Parent Child Intersquad Meet at the Appleton YMCA.  It was the team goal to raise over $5,000 for the Annual Campaign.  We had approximately 100 participants in the meet and there was an internal challenge that if the families could raise over $5000 Coach Angela and Coach Jess would have to race in the meet.  There was a large chart with 200 post it squares on it so the athletes could track the progress of our fundraising. We had many parents and athletes that were excited about seeing the coaches race so in addition to their meet entry fees and other fundraising efforts they bought squares off the chart for $25.  Once the chart was empty and to end the evening, a relay of Coach Jess, Coach Andrea, Coach Rob, Coach Amy and Coach Adam raced a relay of Coach Angela, Coach Steve, Coach Adrianna, Coach Elizabeth and Coach Spenser.  The athletes lined the pool to race the coaches and to cheer.  At the end they made sure to give all of the coaches feedback about their races. It was an enjoyable night for all participants and many parents found out how much their children have improved during the past season.

FCY Members wish everyone else the best of luck as they officially kick off their annual campaign efforts!
