Bishop Beisner Returns From Sabbatical and
Joins Pathways Youth Pilgrimage
Bishop Beisner returned from his sabbatical this week, having attended the successful launch of the Soyuz MS-01 spacecraft from Kazakhstan and welcoming his first grandson last week in southern California. In the coming months you may spot the bishop looking carefully at his cell phone, which has an app that tracks the International Space Station's location, or he could be checking out the latest cute baby pictures of grandson Talon. We continue to offer prayers for safe travels for Kate and the other space station astronauts, and for wellness and blessings for the Beisner family.
Earlier this week, the bishop joined ordinands in our diocese on a retreat as they prepare for ordination in August. He is now preparing for the start of the Pathways Youth Pilgrimage that will visit sights of historic racial inequality in northern California. Bishop Beisner will be a part of a leadership team that will explore issues of race and reconciliation with a group of young people from congregations in our diocese. "The work of racial reconciliation in our society is rooted in a deep and very old need for justice and healing," he shares. "The events of recent years make it even more crucial that we look together at our common history and at the ways our faith can teach us, knowing that the Holy Spirit can transform us." Please join us in prayer for everyone involved in this pilgrimage as they make this historic journey together.
This journey toward reconciliation in northern California begins on Sunday, July 31st and the group will be on the road until August 5th. They will be learning strategies for reconciliation, as they visit sites in our diocese where injustices have been committed in society's name. "It's more powerful to be at a place," said Kirstyn Teuscher, a college sophomore who helped organize this event and also attended the Lift Every Voice: Freedom Ride last summer in North Carolina. These pilgrimages are part of a three-year commitment to learn about reconciliation in the U.S. and abroad. They are led by young people from churches in our diocese, some of whom also journeyed to South Africa this summer to learn about apartheid.

Youth Leaders Make Pilgrimage to South Africa
When Bishop Beisner and youth and young adult leaders from the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California traveled to North Carolina last summer to take part in Lift Every Voice: Freedom Ride, it began a three-year commitment to learn about ways to seek justice and reconciliation at home and abroad.
Many of the same young people made a life changing trip to South Africa this summer in the second year of their pilgrimage. The South African part of their journey reunited them with Anglicans from Botswana and Cape Town and helped deepen relationships formed in North Carolina, said the Rev. Sarah Quinney, Assistant Rector at St. John's Episcopal Church in Roseville.

Office of the Bishop Staff Announcement
The Office of the Bishop is pleased to announce that Paula Schaap has joined our staff as the new Director of Communications! Paula's lifelong vocation has been writing, telling and discovering stories. One of her greatest joys as a writer and editor is to help others find their voice and tell their own stories. At the congregations where she worshipped, she put her skills as a journalist to work helping them improve their social media presence and increasing press coverage for events. She has been an editor and reporter for more than a decade, covering a range of subjects, including religion, science, film, the law and business.
