"Whoa!"
A special word has caught my attention over the last few weeks. I've been hearing the word whoa a great deal recently, and am also noticing how often I say it myself.  I was with a group of people recently, for example, where a woman was describing the work she does as a tutor in an after school youth program.  As she talked about how necessary the work is and how moved she is by doing it, I noticed that several of us responded by saying, "Whoa, that is really powerful!"

Recently I attended my young grandson's birthday party where exclamations of "whoa" were everywhere.  Young children are easily awed by the smallest of things, whether it be a birthday cake, the gift of a new toy, a beautiful bird in a nearby tree, or the delight of being pulled around in a wagon.  And when young children express their awe and delight, they don't just say it with their voice, they proclaim it with their whole body, their whole face lights up as they shout, "Whoaaaaaaaaa!"

From the Bishop

Bishop at Outdoor Chapel
Dear Friends in Christ:

Grace and peace to you.

As I write this, the focus for many of us is on final preparations for Convention. I am greatly looking forward to gathering soon, and to a joyful and productive time together in Redding. May this Convention be greatly blessed.

One detail I want you to be aware of is that the offering at this year's Convention Eucharist has been designated for Episcopal Relief and Development, in support of ERD's work with Syrian refugees. I hope that your delegation will come prepared to be generous is response to this great need.

Please also come prepared regarding the resolution (R7-14) passed last year, directing all congregations to have a current Disaster Preparedness Plan. If you have not already done so, please be certain that someone from your congregation has been in touch with Margaret Dunning or Elsa Dooling about your progress on that project. Chances are, I will not call upon you at Convention. But please be prepared to report.

You will hear of it at Convention, if not before, that the current Board of Camp Noel Porter has eliminated the Executive Director position, effective December 31, 2015, in response to their severe financial crisis. I have also asked for all members of that Board who might otherwise be eligible for re-election to resign as of Convention, and I will be nominating to you a new group of persons who will comprise a re-constituted Board for the urgent and demanding work ahead. This is a complex matter that will receive focused effort, as we work to discern what the partnership between the diocese, Camp Noel Porter and St. Nicholas', Tahoe City will look like. Please keep this situation, and all whom it impacts, in your prayers.

As we go forward, please also help to keep this personal word from me clear in everyone's mind: our commitment to ministry to children and youth in this diocese is absolute and unwavering. It is at the heart of our mission, and of my episcopate, and while I am your Bishop it will always be one of our highest priorities. Camp ministries are an important part of that commitment, and Camp Noel Porter is an important resource in living out that commitment. God guide us in addressing this challenge.

We will also gather in Convention rejoicing in the reality that Michael Curry is now our new Presiding Bishop. The Installation Service itself was glorious, as you have by now heard and seen, and this new era promises to be an exciting one. I am very happy for our Church!

May this month be a time of blessing in your life and ministry. I especially wish you all a most happy Thanksgiving.

In Christ,

Office of the Bishop
