Teen Challenge is expanding in Africa. This month we have several reports on Teen Challenge's progress in bringing hope to the addicted in Africa.

Be sure to read Jerry's article on The Joy of Giving.

May God bless you and your ministry.

The Joy of Giving
Jerry Nance
Jerry Nance
By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

As I was reading recently in 1 Chronicles chapters 28 and 29 I was so impressed with the truths that were unfolding. I had read this many times, but for some reason these facts just jumped off of the pages at me. Take a look at the joy of giving that we see.

David is in the latter years of his life and is wanting to build the temple. God gave him the plans but told him that he would not build it; his son Solomon would. David brings all of the leaders of Israel together and begins to speak of the great task ahead, building the palatial structure of the temple of God. David then sets up one of the best examples of leading a Capital Building Campaign that we find in the Bible. He raises the funds to build the temple in this process.

1. David Declared His Vision to Build the Temple

In Chapter 28:2, David calls all the leaders together, stands to his feet, and shares the vision the Lord has given him. He goes on to tell of the plans, and in verse 8 he declares his successor, Solomon, will have the task of building the temple.

As David did, leaders must hear from God, and they own the responsibility to cast the vision and see that people buy into the vision. This takes leadership, clear communication, and a great plan to be successful. Just declaring a vision is not enough. One must have the capacity to get buy-in from others and then make a plan together that people can see and believe in. People follow leaders of vision and passion.

David no doubt had the ability to command respect and loyalty as he had lived his life following the voice of the Lord. People knew that he knew how to hear from the Lord. They believed him when he stood up and declared his plan to build the temple. They believed him when he said that he was not the man to lead it, but Solomon his son was to lead this project. David then took on the role of raising the money necessary for the project. Senior leaders do well to own this responsibility along with their key leaders and board.

David was clear in his vision and his plan. The people readily stood with him to make it happen.

2. The Senior Leader Gives First and sets the Example of Generosity!

In 1 Chronicles 29:2 we see an amazing statement that sets the tone for giving and is a great model of true leadership.

David says, " With all my resources I have provided," then he gives in detail his contribution to the building project. The Temple of God! Then in verse 4 David says, "Besides my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver." He sets the tone here for sacrificial giving with the amount he is giving as the leader.

3. The Senior Leadership Give Sacrificially and Give Joyfully

The next key principle in the Joy of Giving is seeing the key leaders respond and give! In verse 6 notice, "Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of the king's work gave willingly." (vs. 7) They gave toward the work of the temple of God and they gave generously.

4. Gift-in-Kind Gifts are also Key to any Major Building Project!

In-kind-gifts are things like concrete, timber, bricks, block, lighting, flooring, nails, roofing supplies, use of equipment, labor, and many other things that contribute to a project. People can give jewelry, gold coins, land, cars, etc, that are often given for us to sell so we can use the funds for a project.

Here in 1 Chronicles we see one of the first examples of this kind of giving when we see how the people respond to David and the leaders' generosity.

Vs 8 reads, "Any who had precious stones gave them to the treasury." Think about this for a second. The people heard David's vision to build the temple and he probably described how the building would be designed and outfitted. People willingly and freely felt the joy of giving what was precious to them. Precious stones were then given to the project. Perhaps there were other things like gold rings, or earrings, or other jewels. But, we at least know that precious stones were given.

People caught the vision and gave in-kind-gifts that would help to make the project complete. I have seen this happen time and again when we share a vision to build a new building or expand an area of the facility. There are people in the area or in a church service that hear about the vision and they come up and offer gifts they have that will be needed for the project.

5. Everyone Rejoiced in the Process of Giving

Vs 9. "The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord." Wow! They had given freely and wholeheartedly, and the people watching them give saw this and began rejoicing with them.

Think about the tone and mood of the crowd when David then asked the people to give. This must have been a fulfilling day for David in his leadership to see the total buy-in from his leaders and the people. When he witnessed the generosity of his leaders, and he felt their sincere hearts and pure intent, he rejoiced. His heart must have been bubbling with joy as he observed the amounts of gold, silver, and precious stones being given. It must have overwhelmed him to see the people who were likely not so generous in the past.

GTC Africa West African Tour 2015

Awareness Meeting, Ghana 2015
Awareness Meeting, Ghana 2015

On April 27 - 30, 2015, five West Africa A/G Superintendents hosted one hundred invited West African denomination and ministry leaders in Akkra, Ghana, to introduce GTC Africa Teen Challenge in detail.  The goal was to enlist 20 leaders to help launch 15 new TC ministries in West Africa by April 2017, and establish a regional office by 2018.

Additional Awareness meetings have been scheduled in East Africa, South Africa, as well as additional West African meetings in Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo.

Ann Droll, GTC Africa communication coordinator reports on upcoming meetings.

 A Note from Anna Droll...

The beauty of the Awareness Meeting held in Accra, Ghana this May is reflected in the relational bridges made into some of the French-speaking nations of West Africa. The tour I will embark on this Fall will be a mission of building on these relationships. The ultimate goal is the reinforcement of a vision for implementing Teen Challenge right there in their ministry contexts.

The tour begins in Nige
David and Naomi Omih, TC Nigeria
David and Naomi Omih, TC Nigeria
ria involving a graduation of Teen Challenge students in the city of Jos with directors David and Naomi Omih. As well, we will be contacting two new possible newcomers into the TC family: Raymond in the western city of Ibadan, and Millicent in Orlu in the east!

Following Nigeria, the program in Ivory Coast, Togo, and Benin will involve a first time introduction of Teen Challenge to the Assemblies of God national Superintendents and their councils. In each venue I will be received by the delegates we first met at our Awareness meeting! I'm more than excited about these meetings because the relationships made and reinforced there is what our partnerships will be built on!

The last stop in Cameroon will be a joyous occasion since we launch our TC Cameroon there with brother Benjamin Namkpea! I remember that while in corporate prayer in Nairobi, Kenya last year I "saw" Benjamin digging deep and planting a yellow flag. After sharing the vision with him, he said, "That's the color of our national flag." I'm thrilled to see this center planting come to fruition and look forward to the possibility of seeing Benjamin's work established one day as a national TC center!

The goal for GTC Africa in 2016 is to solidify our association with pastors and evangelists in West Africa by returning to our West African associates with our GTC training modules. I sense that the Living Free ministry model, which I will introduce, will really take root in the hearts of the leaders there through the training Gregg Fischer will bring in 2016. No doubt, Doug Wever will bring the same visionary inspiration that lit the mission fire in Ghana at the Awareness Meeting, and eventually the others reaching out to us from Brazzaville, Congo, and new locations in Sierra Leone and Liberia will all come to land in the TC family. Global Teen Challenge Africa is in irresistible mission momentum, and now is the time to ride the wave!

Global Teen Challenge Africa moving forward

In spite of xenophobic attacks and deaths that filled the headlines in South Africa in April, leaders from 12 nations joined Dev Doug Wever for the ALL AFRICA Sustainability Conference and the presence of God overflowed in Pretoria. Dr. Jacobus Nomdoe, executive director,of TC South Africa was a tremendous agent of reconciliation in the face of the crisis. The GTC Leadership Summit, directed by Rev. Doug Wever and hosted by Rev. Jacobus Nomdoe and Ricardo Heilbron was a tremendous season of refreshing, reconciliation, and ministry. We were blessed by the move of God.
Africa Men
Captivating worship and enthusiastic praise highlighted the times of ministry that led to anointed teaching, insightful training and powerful times of prayer at the altar....and dancing?

This conference had the largest gathering of Teen Challenge women's ministry leaders in GTC partnership on the continent of Africa. Amazing women and powerful leaders will bring lasting results as they go into the harvest field in Africa.
Africa Women
As women from Ethiopia to South Africa and from Uganda to Kenya cried out for the needs of women and children, the men joined their voices to the chorus of intercession. Leaders from pioneering centers such as Ghana, Tanzania, and Ivory Coast to established centers such as Angola, Swaziland, and South Africa
echoed their cry for freedom in Africa.

PraiseAs Teen Challenge continues to take a stronger foothold in Africa we were excited about the upcoming West Africa leadership conference in May which will bring together church leaders from 12 nations with Teen Challenge leaders to put forward a strategy to engage the drug problem in West Africa with the good news of the gospel.

20,000 Decisions for Christ in Tanzania

Bernie Gillott, Global Teen Challenge Evangelism coordinator, recently partnered with Johannes Amritzer and Mission SOS in Tanzania. Johannes is a granduate and former staff member of Teen Challenge in Europe and now works as an evangelist around the world.
Here is Bernie's report of the event.

Barafu grounds (Swahili for field of ice) became a field of fire, as Holy Ghost power fell on the people of the Dodoma Tanzania under the ministry of Johannes Amritzer and Mission SOS. In the capital city, Barafu grounds is designated as a free-speech zone. It was more than a free speech zone, because, taking the words we shared, GOD made it "free life" zone. Julie Willkander and the SOS team ministered powerfully in music. Johannes, a graduate and former staff of Teen Challenge in Europe, now carries the good news worldwide.
Johannes preaching
This cluttered plot, littered with abandoned trucks and broken people, surrounded by huge semi trucks and poverty, was transformed into an arena of miracles. By the final night, 50,000 had gathered to hear the good news of the gospel. In the dust, surrounded by despair and overwhelming need, Masai and Muslim, Hindu and Hutu, animist, agnostic and curious atheist came to listen and found faith as they confessed Jesus Christ as Lord of their life.

More than 20,000 folks completed decision cards and thousands of Muslims confessed Christ on id Al-Fitr, (EID). While EID may mark the end of Ramadan in Islam, for many it was a new beginning for faith and new LIFE! God Bless you Johannes and the SOS MISSION teams
