The Value of Servanthood
 |
Jerry Nance
|
By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge
This month I want us to look once again at one of the values, so critical to Teen Challenge which we embrace in this ministry. As I think back over the years, I am reminded of so many on our team who exhibit the spirit and value of servanthood. I am reminded of men and women who are just wonderful people who never consider the question, "What's in it for me?" They just serve to the good of others first, and the good of the ministry. WOW! God grant us all hearts of servants.
I continue to herald the idea that we can do more than I can, any day. We are a team of committed men and women whom God has called out to serve the thousands of men, women, boys, and girls who walk through our doors each year. The ministry and value of servanthood is critical to the future of any organization. Just think, if all of those individuals who have servant hearts leave us, where would we be; where would you be? That's a scary thought to me. We so depend on those with servant hearts to keep the culture of this organization true to the heart of God and focused on serving those in need. May God grant us the grace to appreciate the servants around us, and may we ourselves strive to live out the value of servanthood.
I want to draw your attention to a teaching that John Maxwell, one of our Global Advisory Board members, wrote on this subject. He takes us to John 1:41-42.
"Today we're going to look at a person who showed such a servant's heart. What a biblical model we find in the life of Andrew. I begin to think about somebody who was a servant, who did ministry, but not up front. Somebody who didn't sing the solo, didn't preach the message, but just did ministry week in and week out. I look at the life of Andrew, and I begin to get inspired. There are three things out of his life that I want to draw upon. In John 1 we are introduced not only to Andrew, but also to the kind of person he was, the kind that made the disciples of Jesus great...the kind that makes a ministry great."
The Example of Andrew...
Andrew's ministry was characterized by three significant insights the others didn't seem to grasp.
1. The Value of people.
Everywhere you find Andrew in the Gospels, you find someone pouring his life into someone else's.
John 1:41-42 gives us a good sense of Andrew and his effectiveness for the kingdom. The first thing he did was to find his brother and tell him he had found the Messiah. Here's a beautiful example of Andrew, behind the scenes, going out and getting his brother, and bringing him to Jesus.
Remember the time when the Greeks wanted to see Jesus, and they came to Philip? They recognized Philip as one of the disciples, and they came to him because he was Greek. The first thing that Philip did, instead of taking the Greeks to see Jesus, was to find Andrew. And Andrew took the Greeks to see Jesus. Andrew was always finding people. He was always pouring his life into people, because he understood the value of the individual.
Five principles for individual people helpers.....
1. Character is more important than gifts. What we are and who we are is more important than what we do.
2. Being godly is more important than being right. Many people have many different opinions, but God wants us to live righteously.
3. Love is more important than good works. Loving the people of God is more important than anything we have.
4. You cannot lose by being a learner. If you keep having a servant's attitude and have a spirit of learning, you'll always grow.
5. There is always room for one more servant.
2. The value of invisible service. Behind-the-scenes ministry really is where servanthood begins. Picture with me for just a moment the story that we've looked at in John chapter one:
The day he brought Pete to Jesus, Andrew understood that he would never be one of the top disciples. These two boys grew up together. Peter was the charismatic individual, the leader, the strong one. When the two of them went anywhere, Peter was the one everybody noticed and everybody followed. Andrew, growing up, no doubt lived in the shadow of his brother. And now he's bringing him to Jesus. He's basically saying, "The moment that I introduce him to Jesus, I know that I'll never be one of the top disciples, never be in the inner circle. I know Jesus will see Peter's leadership ability, and immediately take him, and I will kind of fall back into the ranks of the other disciples." But what a heart for God! Basically he says, "It's okay. I don't have to be up front. I don't have to be in the inner circle. I don't have to sing the solo, or preach the message, or teach the lesson. It's okay if others don't see me." The people who have the ability and the willingness to do ministry in the background, unlike some of us who are in front all the time, getting the praise and the pats on the back, are doing just the gritty day-in, day-out background ministry and displaying a servant's heart. Their motives are pure. They're doing it for God because they love Him, not for applause, recognition, or the praise of others. Jesus said the way to greatness is servanthood. EVANGELISM: More than a Legacy, a Promise for the Future.
The ministry of Teen Challenge, birthed in evangelism, has thrived in outreach, and now sets the a pace worldwide impacting communities and nations with HOPE and the good news of God's love. Even in Muslim nations, closed to traditional missionary efforts, we find open doors for the good news of Jesus Christ and His transforming love.
 | Bernie Gillott |
I sat with a Muslim Imam in a country I cann0t name early this year. His eyes were cool and measured as he glared at me with distain and what seemed to be deliberate animosity. He retorted, "I have no use of for your Western religion. I have no respect for your American Christianity!"
Suddenly his face seemed to soften and he said softly, " but we need your Jesus. Our young men are dying. I have seen them cut off the hand of a drug addict in punishment only to watch him inject drugs with the other hand. It is hopeless."

? HOPE or HOPELSS ?
|
Within the context of his religion and culture, he saw Jesus the healer. Evangelism, in the context of 2014 is not about religion and proselytization, but sharing the "living hope" of new life in Jesus. The world has tried solve the addiction problem with education and condemnation for centuries. You cannot teach or criticize someone into change. "Shame-based" religions around the world have found no answer for their drug problem. Criticism, and shame alone cannot break the power of addiction, only HOPE can. Jesus is that Hope and that is why it is our vision to ... PUT HOPE IN REACH
The miraculous testimony of changed lives, touched by the ministry of Teen Challenge are what make this ministry and our logo a universal emblem of hope to hurting people around the world. We are not so foolish as to believe that Teen Challenge is that hope, but it is our prayer that we always point them to Jesus who is.
In Romans the apostle Paul said "In mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, ... from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel" (Rom15: 19).
The apostle Paul talks about how he "fully preached" the gospel. The gospel fully preached, is more than just words, but the demonstration of the power of God to break the stronghold of addiction wherever it is found. Addiction is a curse. The root of addiction is sin ... capital "S ." Take the "S" out of the curse and you have the "CURE."
Hope in Jesus, through the grace of God; that is the active legacy and the living promise of Teen Challenge. The Father's gift is grace to reveal the needs, and power to break the control of sin . Rather than focus on "reports" of new initiatives and international strategies, we felt the message of Evangelism was best expressed in these individual testimonies of God's changing power. Enjoy.

EVANGELISM in Pune, India
Can God's LOVE heal, broken lives and children in a brothel?
Human Trafficking in India has been a continuing tragedy in India since the time of the Peshwa, 1749 to 1818. In Pune, prostitution has grown with industrialization and urbanization. Over the last few decades, the escalating crisis of trafficking women and children is a national stigma.
Most innocent girls think they are coming to the city to learn computer skills but find themselves trapped, compelled to become prostitutes to release their family from the bondage of their debt. Shipping containers, like the one to the left, become the life prison for women trapped in human trafficking. That is where Timothy and his team minister.

|
MAAHI
Maahi was born into poverty and sold into slavery. Her mother died when she was five. A friend that had custody sold her to a brothel. At 8 years old, they started using her for the sex trade. When she was unable to entertain customers, she was beaten with iron rods and given alcohol and drugs. She escaped and fled to Pune with her daughter, Nandini.
|
|
Maahi hated selling her body for survival and she came to a place called Kondhwa NIBM Road, where Timothy and Joyce found Maahi & her daughter, Nandini. The street, surrounded by pain, was home for Nandini, Maahi's oldest daughter. Nandini first came to TC after Tim and Joyce found her on the street banging on car doors, begging at the traffic signals.
|
Maahi gave her to Teen Challenge to care for. One year later, as Nandini pleaded for them find her mother. Maahi came in off the street. Years of wounding and pain and the need for healing makes ministering to these women a real challenge. Please stand with us for restoration of this beautiful family.

VIDEO CENTER: TESTIMONIES
RICARDO TESTIMONY
Cape Town, South Africa is listed as one of the most violent cites with one of the highest murder rates on the earth as reported by Murder Capitals of the world.

From the mean streets of the Cape Flats through the Gangs, addiction and bondage ... In his Ricardo's own words, " I thought I would be lucky. I could dance with the devil and not get caught. When I felt the bullet tear through my shirt and into my chest ...

In Nairobi, Kenya last month, he joined a team of International Teen Challenge leaders at the ALL AFRICA LEADERSHIP training as we went to the streets - the slum at the Haruma roundabout.
Through the acrid smoke that filled the air from the fires burn 24 hours a day, Ricardo proclaimed the good news of the gospel. As he ministered, the power of his testimony and intensity of his message set a challenge to other African leaders go return to their nation with a refreshed vision for evangelism . HAHN- From Despair New Joy
| Hahn was sold into slavery by human traffickers at the age of 9. Raped, beaten, and lost, it seemed as though her nightmare would never end. When she finally escaped the first time from Thailand , she thought she had found a way out. But in Cambodia. It got only worse... then God intervened.

Anthea: Still in the Battle
There is no more iconic Global Teen Challenge "before/after" image than the photos of Anthea from TC Western Cape in South Africa in 2005 ... the face of a miracle.
 | Anthea before TC |
|
The Broken Chains story, continues to stand the test of time. It was a treasure for Anthea to see her minister on the street in May.
Anthea continues to serve women as staff at TC, as she serves God in the community and in her local church.

When I was 11 years old, I was raped by my step-father. He was drunk and later claimed, because he was drunk, he thought I was my mother. That began a very dark road through drugs, addiction and satanism.

Jose languished in prison, addicted to heroin, until he was rescued by Jesus and came to TC. He completed the program and now directs Santiago TC.
Ledi was on the street lost in addiction and Jose, as Executive director saw the miracle of new life reproduced in her life as evangelism continues there in Santiago.

IMPACTING SOVIET GEORGIA
ROCK THE BLOCK- BA'TUMI
Doug & Anna Boyle brought a team of over 50 Kazakhstan Teen Challenge leaders and graduates with Yekin and Madlena Khadarova to Soviet Georgia to join us in Tbilisi.

Following the dedication of the Tbilisi Center and ten days of powerful ministry, the climax was to be a powerful Rock the Block with Madlena Khaidarova in Ba'tumi. We crossed the mountains 12 hours by train to the West coast only to learn that political and M-sl-m leaders conspired to close down all efforts to find a significant venue for Rock the Block. A call for prayer went out and God answered the prayers for a strategic venue for Rock the Block Ba'tumi.
During a casual walk, with no finances or other options available, the Holy Spirit led Doug Boyle, executive director of Teen Challenge, to the Piazza, an amazing historic venue in the city center. In the previous 60 days, the Piazza had hosted events for Sting & Andrea Bocelli. Doug Boyle found the owner and shared his vision of reconciliation.
By God's grace, with no money and no budget for sound or lights, the Piazza provided everything for free. Right on time, just 72 hours before the concert, God moved us from a 75-seat Baptist Church to the most prestigious venue in Ba'tumi. Such an evidence of God's favor and an amazing answer to your prayers. Please continue to pray for Teen Challenge in Armenia, Iran, and Soviet Georgia

EUROPE TEEN CHALLENGE-Coffee and Miracles
|
Europe Teen Challenge began with a coffeehouse in the Hague, Netherlands in 1968. The first residential program was launched in 1969. Since then as Europe Teen Challenge has grown to Centers in 31 Nations, Tom Bremer and a committed team of ETC leaders keep EVANGELSIM and Coffee house ministry at the Center of the ETC arsenal of outreach.
| |
Many countries in Europe do weekly - some daily - evangelism. This is mostly accomplished via coffee house ministries. There are active coffeehouse and evangelistic ministry in over 24 nations. As Netherlands was the trendsetter in 1968, they continue to move forward pioneering a culturally relevant outreach model called "the Bridge." In the United Kingdom, they employ double-decker buses and outreaches at needle exchanges. In Poland. they operate 33 coffee houses and a network of 20 coffeehouses in Portugal are open one to two nights a week, just to mention a few of the highlights of the work that continues in Europe. From Luxembourg to Germany to the Czech Republic lives are being touched in coffeehouse ministry. In Israel, , they are distributing copies of the Cross and the Switchblade in Russian, Hebrew, and Arabic.

The Cross and the Switchblade: 50 Years of Miracles
by David Batty. This article appeared in the Pentecostal Evangel June 1, 2014
How does a book about a young unknown Assemblies of God country preacher become a best-seller with more than 11 million copies sold in 10 years? The story of David Wilkerson coming to New York City to share the love of Jesus with seven teenagers on trial for the murder of Michael Farmer is told in the book The Cross and the Switchblade. Instead of being able to witness to those seven teens, Wilkerson was thrown out of court on Feb. 28, 1958, and ended up with his picture on the front page of New York City newspapers the next morning. But that failure was part of God's plan to use David Wilkerson to help more than just seven young men. In the months that followed, Wilkerson founded Teen Challenge, a ministry to youth, adults and families affected by drug addiction and other life-controlling problems. To read more, choose link. |
