Africa is a vast continent. This month we have several reports on Teen Challenge's progress in bringing hope to the addicted in Africa.

Jerry Nance is sharing the need for leaders to hear from God.

May God bless you and your ministry.

The leader must hear from God

Jerry Nance
Jerry Nance

By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

Over the next months I want to highlight some principles that have made all the difference in the world for me as I have learned leadership. I want to begin with the principle of hearing from God. As leaders in this day and age we must not miss time alone with God so we can hear his voice and follow His will in our journey. His call guides us step by step into His perfect will for our lives.
This is a condensed version of chapter one from my book, From Dream to Reality.

No strategy, no guideline, no "how to book," no advice from the most influential person we know is as important as hearing the voice of God.

The dream God gives you during prayer and the call that comes from God are what keep you afloat through the storms of problems that will turn up to confront you. The call of God will keep you firmly founded in the face of doubters. The call of God will keep you when the ministry finances are at an all time low and the pressure is on you as a leader to raise them.

Your call is foremost and at times is your only surety; and before launching out into some endeavor, be certain that He is indeed the one who has called you. Investing time on your knees and on your face before God, clearly waiting for His direction, is where He will confirm the steps to attaining your dream.

Throughout my experience, God has allowed my dream and visions to be challenged in ways that made it appear impossible to accomplish. God brings into play all types of situations to get us to trust and depend upon Him, and He often strips us of all our pride and brings us to a place where we are broken, ready to totally give up, a place where we are finally ready to completely rely on Him.

Paul Yonggi Cho said, "Never trust a man who doesn't walk with a limp."  Dr. Cho's statement speaks of the brokenness we experience as we encounter life's difficult situations, God never puts on us more than we can handle. In the midst of all the conflict, chaos and confusion, God protects us and we survive.  Our survival speaks of that quality within a person's character that is developed and polished through the pain. We learn, but we walk with a limp, a little bit wiser and a bit more dependent on God.  I began to walk with a limp.

Leaders often endure difficult challenges while pursuing their dreams. Sometimes it may seem your vision or dream has died, and then, at just the right moment, God comes on the scene and brings your dream to life. Let me share with you how God called me to the work of Teen Challenge back in 1991.

Have you ever received one of those phone calls that seemed to totally change the direction of your life? A call that challenged you with a seemingly impossible task? A call that asked you to give up everything you had worked for years to build? A call that you deemed in the beginning couldn't possibly be God?  But a call you just couldn't feel a release to bypass altogether?

While serving as pastor of a church, I received just such a call.  And that call began a series of the most challenging yet opportune experiences of my life. From these core challenges, God proved Himself in ways I had never experienced or imagined.

My secretary buzzed me one day and said, "Pastor, you've got a call on line one. It's a Mr. Bob Manderscheid." Bob was a member of the Board of Directors of Teen Challenge of Florida. "Jerry, I'd like to ask you to consider serving in the position of executive director for Teen Challenge of Florida. I believe you're the man for the job. Every time I pray, I feel God directing me to you."

I responded, "Bob, I do appreciate you believing that I would make a good executive director, but I'm not even going to pray about it. I don't feel the timing is right, and I don't feel God is in this kind of a move for me right now. Thanks, but I am not your man."

Years earlier I had worked with David Wilkerson, setting up crusades in large auditoriums, organizing outreaches in inner-city areas around the country, and teaching in his staff training school.  My wife and I had also opened a home for women with addiction problems in Miami.  So, I had a heart for Teen Challenge, but I didn't feel the slightest interest that this position was for me.

Global Teen Challenge Africa
Bulembu Child

Global Teen Challenge is deeply committed to putting hope within reach of every addict in Africa.  Started sixteen years ago, Global Teen Challenge Africa serves the Teen Challenge ministries in 15 African countries. But there are huge areas of Africa without a Teen Challenge presence, especially the Muslim nations of north Africa.

AIDS and illiteracy are two other major issues that complicate our mission of bringing hope to those in such places of desperation. God is raising up national leaders with a vision to expand this ministry in their own nation, and to be part of planting Teen Challenge in other nations.

For example, Nigeria has three Teen Challenge ministries, but they have a vision to establish one in every state of their nation-they have 36 states.

Uganda TC Team Pray with us as we seek to expand the training of new leaders for Teen Challenge across the continent.

The Teen Challenge leaders of Africa have also adopted Teen Challenge standards of accreditation and are now working to implement this across the continent. We believe God will use this to lift the quality of ministry going on in each location.

Pray with us also that God will help these ministries establish micro-enterprises and other options to provide a financial base to sustain their ministries. In the midst of so many challenges, we know that God is able to do miracles of transformation.

TC Mid-America ministry in Nigeria

Wayne Soemo, Program Director of Teen Challenge Mid-America, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, led a team of students to Jos, Nigeria in March, 2013. Nigeria is one-third larger than Texas. With a population over 152 million, it is the most populous country in Africa. Situated on the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria is critical to Teen Challenge's strategy to reach West Africa.

As Nigeria is increasingly  impacted by religiously  motivated, terrorism, crime, and socioeconomic unrest, the new Nigeria Teen Challenge is poised to impact Nigeria at the "living edge" to minister truth, light, and hope in a community shrouded in darkness, religious oppression, and violence.

Teen Challenge Mid-America has a tremendous heart for evangelism and has partnered helping to pioneer Teen Challenge centers around the world. In Nigeria, they worked on the street, in schools, and the community to help program director David Omih to  move forward with the launch of the Teen Challenge center in Jos. an area where Christian churches were bombed,  This area has had over 32 people killed last year between Christmas and New Years. The TC Center in Jos is on the contested border of the Muslim and Christian community where they truly stand as a light for the gospel to meet the needs of  those in bondage across cultural and religious boundaries.

Rwanda Teen Challenge reaching the community

Rwanda first student
Praying for their first student

Exciting developments in Rwanda as courageous TC Pioneer, Willie Ruminera has launched the first Teen Challenge. In the aftermath  of  the  genocidal mass slaughter of the Tutsis by the Hutus that took place in 1994 in the East African state of Rwanda where estimates of the death toll ranged from 500,000 -1,000,000, Teen Challenge continues the Great Commission legacy of reconciliation.

Willie asks the "Link Partners" to please keep praying for Jean de Dieu their first student in Rwanda. He is doing great like a new baby enjoying his new life in Christ. It is so good to watch the work of Holy Spirit in his life but also pray for Jean to let Jesus complete the work he has started in him.

Pray also for upcoming trip in October 19 - 28 from Oklahoma team with Shawn and Shannon Blankenship and the Oklahoma TC Team. (See below for more on this trip.)

Oklahoma Teens to help in Rwanda

We at the Oklahoma Teen Challenge Adolescent centers are very excited by the opportunity to be a part of helping Teen Challenge Rwanda. We are looking forward to being involved in training and educating staff as well as local pastors on the power of Jesus Christ to change lives through the ministry of Teen Challenge. Our vision is to partner with the people in Kigali to help them establish a viable, thriving, powerful presence of Teen Challenge in the capital city of Rwanda.

  OK Team to Rwanda

We are looking forward to participating in street and children's outreaches. The team is preparing to present the gospel in unique ways to reach the people of Kigali for Christ. During these times we hope to reach those in need of Teen Challenge. We are praying for divine appointments during these outreaches as well as during the training sessions. Please be in prayer for the team of 23 that will there from Oct 19-28.

Zambia Teen Challenge completing construction

The Teen Challenge center has continued to do very well; both the staff and students are excited about moving into the new dorm at
TC Zambia
TC Zambia
the ministry site soon. In July we told the estate agent that we would not renew the lease agreement of the rented TC house for another one year, as a result we need to move out before October when the last quarter rental payments are due. This was a very bold decision to make as there was still much construction work to complete the dormitory.

From August 1 we declared 52 days of prayer for provision to complete the construction. With very little time remaining before September ends, we still trust God to make a way for a miraculous break through even though it practically seems impossible to meet our goal. Please join us in prayers for the Lord to move in miraculous ways.

The dormitory construction is slowly progressing and now nearing a habitable state, but of course far from completion still. The interior walls are all plastered, concrete floors done and the toilets & showers almost complete as well. Some major tasks like plumbing, glass fitting, painting and furniture still have to be worked on.

The TC crew did a good job digging pits for the septic tank and soak-away, while some women from the community helped us to heap up the good soil in one place in preparation for the next mud brick building.

Our deepest appreciation continue to go out to you all for your support, encouragement and prayers as we tread upon this territory for God's glory.
