Greetings!

Welcome to this month's edition of our Leadership Link. Latin America and the Caribbean is our featured region this month. We have many great testimonies and reports of the work that God is doing in this region through the ministry of Teen Challenge.

Also be sure to check out the article Jerry is sharing on needing an armorbearer.

May God bless you and your ministry.

Today's Role for the Armorbearer

Jerry Nance
Jerry Nance

By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

Teen Challenge leaders today need to be careful to surround themselves with staff who provide the right kind of assistance to enable the ministry to achieve all that God desires. Do you as a leader have a modern day "armorbearer" working with you?

The following article by Earma Brown captures the heart of this issue. I trust it is as much a blessing to you as it has been to me.

Armorbearer in Modern Days: What is it?

By Earma Brown

Saul liked him very much and David became one of his armorbearers. -1 Samuel 16:22b

In biblical days, an armorbearer was one who actually carried the shield and armor of his leader as he went into battle, often acting as his personal assistant. For example, King Saul had several armorbearers assigned to him.

1. In our modern-day, we don't see anyone walking around fully suited in the classical armor of the early centuries.

Nevertheless, in the spiritual realm, we continue to need our armor. The Ephesians' writer commands us to put on the full armor of God so that we can take our stand against the devil's schemes.

2. Just as much as our early century counterparts, we in the ministry of service are to suit up in the Armor of the Spirit and carry the armor of God's leaders in the battle of faith.

The term armorbearer was originally translated from the Hebrew word, nasa, meaning to figuratively or literally lift up, support or simply help.

3. On occasion, Bible translators have translated the word, "help", from the Hebrew word, nasa.

In light of these defining terms, we can see an armorbearer is one that helps or supports the arms of an assigned leader during the times of battle.

A modern day armorbearer is one called by God to serve and help his assigned leader in life, ministry, and especially in the fight of faith.

4. In essence, an armorbearer is called to attend to, minister to, care for, help, be of use, assist, benefit, promote, support, make easy for, nourish, and encourage their leader.

Furthermore, God calls others to walk in the spirit of armorbearing. They may not be assigned specifically to one leader, but they possess the mindset and attitude of an armorbearer.

The attitude of an armorbearer is one of servanthood. The mindset of an armorbearer, as well as those operating in the spirit of one, is to do what it takes to serve and support their leadership.

5. Operating in the spirit of armorbearing can also be described as operating in the principles or pervading qualities of an armorbearer.

The qualities that top the list are servanthood, commitment, attentiveness, support, help, loyalty, and faithfulness.

Armorbearing in the attitude of service is not just the performing of humble tasks, but is an effort to serve Christ in the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, "The servant of all is the greatest of all."

Among my favorite examples, are the great men in Old Testament scripture, many who were faithful armorbearers before their public ministry.

King David, King David's mighty men, Elisha and Joshua exemplified the armorbearing spirit in excellence. Even Elisha's assistant, Gehazi, offers us an example of what we do not want to do as an armorbearer.

6. One need not think our Father God only called armorbearers or helpers to assist in the ancient battles.

Look at New Testament Joseph of Cyprus, nicknamed "Barnabas," or "Son of Encouragement." The most popular view is that Joseph of Cyprus gained these names because he constantly encouraged those to whom he and Paul ministered.

Recently, I have considered another thought as to why he was called "Son of Encouragement." Perhaps it was because he persevered by Paul's side through shipwrecks, stoning and much rejection.

Do not overlook Stephen and Phillip among the seven appointed to wait tables for the early church apostles' feeding program. The leaders assigned them to help while their apostles gave greater focus to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Throughout the Bible and today, God is still calling helpers and armorbearers to lift up the arms of our Ministry leadership.

Operating in the spirit of armorbearing is fulfilling a ministry of help, watchfulness, and intercession on behalf of our leadership.

I believe God has issued a fresh call to serve and support our leaders in this way. Only He knows the spiritual effort and sheer hard work it will take to accomplish the vision of His Church.

The Apostle Paul encouraged us to excel in the gifts that build up the Church. As we in the ministry of helps excel in the gift of service and supporting our leaders, we will come into the unity of faith like never before.

When we each take our place and share the load, our men and women in leadership will suffer less weariness and burnout, giving opportunity for a greater refreshing from the Lord.

Great Things Are Happening in Latin America and the Caribbean!

by Duane Henders, GTC regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

There are Teen Challenge ministries established in 21 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and 8 more ministries are in the process of becoming established. There are invitations to start TC ministries in 8 more locations so we know THE HARVEST IS GREAT BUT THE LABORERS ARE FEW! There are 590 million people living in LAC and many of them are addicted to drugs and alcohol. There are 51 cities with over one million inhabitants so we are continually praying for God to sovereignly call LABORERS to respond to the invitations and launch new ministries to reach the lost in this region.

Brazil Staff Training School

In Sao Paulo, Brazil the Training School had 22 students representing 12 different ministries. One lady rode the bus for 11 hours to get to Sao Paulo for the school. The school is being offered in 4 one-week modules throughout the year. Here is what some of the students said about their experience at the school:

"The classes reignited a desire in my heart that had grown weak, to win my world to Jesus."

"I learned how to obey the call of God on my life...His call became much clearer."

"The training was a total blessing as we saw the Lord operating during all of the classes."

Mexico City School 2013
Mexico City School 2013

In Mexico City, Mexico, the Training School was a one-month intensive with 17 students from Mexico, El Salvador and Trinidad and they represented 8 different ministries. Students from the school are planning to open THREE NEW TC ministries in various cities of Mexico!

Students commented:

"We leave here more prepared to care for and train our students,"

"The call of God became more and more clear,"

"I understand now the role of a leader in TC and that I can't be effective unless I work on developing my own character."

There has been wonderful partnership with other ministries helping with TC ministry in LAC.

Living Free is being taught in the Training Schools and Regional Conferences and has been a key factor in new TC start-ups.

Sustain Hope is offering wonderful assistance in Jamaica, Honduras and soon in Barbados

MAPS groups were a big help in Jamaica

The Lifeline day program is being offered as an option in several new locations

At the Brazil TC National Conference the focus was on GTC Standards of Operation,

Rick Souza leading Brazil TC directors in Strategic planning

Strategic Planning and TC Curriculum training. The highlights were:

  • The Brazil TC directors unanimously adopted the GTC Standards of Operation which they want to use as a guide for developing their TC programs.
  • Rick Souza led them in Strategic Planning and they stated that the planning would help them find "true north," for the TC ministries in Brazil. Their strategic plan is focused on UNITY, SPIRITUAL SUPPORT and STAFF TRAINING. The theme they chose for TC Brazil was "TOGETHER WE ARE BETTER!"
  • Gregg Fischer taught on TC curriculum and now there are 8 certified PSNC teachers in Brazil!

Brief updates from around the region

Bahamas Planning Meeting
Nassau, Bahamas Women's TC team
A new TC women's ministry was just inaugurated in Nassau, Bahamas. They have begun with Living Free in the detox center and are planning to start other groups as well as evangelism and ministry in the women's prison.

In Freeport, Bahamas there are five Living Free groups operating with over 55-60 teenagers attending.

Norbert Schenhals is leading the development of the TC in Cuba. In partnership with Living Free over 200 chaplains have been trained and are using the materials in the prisons and there are plans to develop day programs and resident ministries in every district of the country.

In El Salvador, Norbert Schenhals has helped restructure the TC ministry which is being

El Salvador Teen Challenge

overseen by Costa Rica TC. There is a new board of directors in place, staff are being trained, TC curriculum being used consistently, and micro-industries of a bakery and a restaurant are functioning well to provide financial support for the ministry.

Jamaica TC is aggressively developing the 10 acres of land that was given them by the government. They have built three dormitories and a greenhouse, and have started growing pigs and chickens.

Trinidad TC has sent one of their key staff for intensive TC training and is now making plans to launch Living Free in Trinidad and also on the island of Tobago.

Argentina TC held a week-long training for Christian rehab ministries that was attended by over 35 people from all over Argentina who were trained in TC principles and practices.

Norbert Schenhals coordinated a week of training in Honduras that included sustainability planning and training, teaching on TC principles and seminars on implementing the TC curriculum.

Uruguay TC has made great progress in developing the TC farm which is raising produce for sale and consumption. They have also acquired a beautiful new property for another residential center. They are seeing good results from using the TC curriculum.

It has been a joy to have Norbert and Patricia Schenhals as co-laborers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together we rejoice at the great opportunities we have for training a new generation of TC leaders and for the open doors for new TC ministries to be launched.

To God be the Glory for the great things that are happening through Teen Challenge ministry in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Danilo- A Life restored and much more
by Gregg Fischer, Curriculum Director GTC

I had a chance to sit down with Danilo at lunch one day in Mexico and through an

Gregg & Danilo
Gregg & Danilo

interpreter, he told me his story. Danilo is from El Salvador and is one of our students in the Staff training school. Danilo was 15 years old when he began using drugs, which soon became his life. It lead to dropping out of school and then to a life of crime and drug abuse.

One day, things got so crazy that he stabbed his best friend and then ran away to Guatemala. He stayed there for a few years living in the streets using drugs. Danilo then decided to move back to El Salvador and try to live right. He got a job and got married but still continued using drugs. Within a few years, he lost everything - his home, family and his job. He was now living on the streets again.

By this time he had now been using drugs for over 18 years. One day a friend told him that he could get help at Teen Challenge. He entered the program that very day. There he found a new life in Christ and freedom from drug addiction. He graduated from the one-year program but shortly after relapsed. However, it wasn't the same. Everything worked against him. He knew where he needed to be. God had a call on this life. He contacted Teen Challenge and came back for the restoration program and stayed to work with in the ministry that saved his life. That was in 2006.

Today he is the program director of Teen Challenge in El Salvador. I asked Danilo about his wife and family and he told me that last year he and his wife were remarried after being apart for 12 years. God truly restores what the enemy has stolen.

Danilo told me that he is enjoying the school very much and this will be a great help to their ministry in El Salvador. He plans to implement the curriculum when he returns and also use the training materials from the school to train his staff. (Update: Danilo downloaded the Group Studies recently from iteenchallenge.org and they are beginning to use them with their students.)
