Money talks: industry starts to insist on BIM capabilities

Greetings!

The statement from major property developer Quintain that suppliers need to embrace BIM to stand a chance of winning a part of its £8.8 billion project pipeline is either exciting or worrying, depending upon the current readiness of your business to initiate BIM projects.

Quintain's director of project management, David Crump, explains the firms position quite unequivocally when he says, "We probably need to insist that if you want to work with us you have to take the BIM concept on properly."

And that's just about where we are in terms of BIM adoption. The Government's deadline of 2016 may still be some way off, but that doesn't mean the major players are going to stand still. They can see the change is coming and are determined to move ahead more quickly in order to position their businesses to take a slice of what they hope will still be a very substantial and lucrative public sector pie.

However, the old chestnut of spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt isn't really how we will move forward collectively. To be fair David Crump acknowledges this by adding the reassuring caveat, "We will work with you to do that."

We've long talked about collaboration and the need to work together to embrace the opportunity of change and that's just what we're doing at DSG. To that end we've commissioned a series of instructional videos that demonstrate the features of BIM software by stepping you through individual aspects of a sample project. In our case we've used Vico Office but the principles remain the same for most BIM solutions. By bringing the software to life in this way we believe we can show how it's much more than a necessary evil and can add productivity and profitability to your business.

You can view the first video by following the link in this email. We'll be issuing a series of videos over the weeks and months ahead so please let me know if there are any subjects you'd like us to cover and we'll do our best to address them in future issues.

National service: supporting you across the UK

It's been a long time since I've talked directly about DSG and that's been a very deliberate approach in these emails. My intention has been to share our experiences of working with BIM, both good and bad, in order to help us form partnerships and alliances that will enable us to collectively bid for business such as that coming from Quintain.

However, as part of that, it might help to explain briefly that we do offer national support from our offices in Newbury, Coventry and Manchester. Even though BIM is about electronic collaboration, with technology driving more effective communication, I still believe that it's important to have a 'foot on the ground' to enable us to build strong relationships with our customers and partners.

Please contact DSG by email or phone to arrange a meeting at one of our offices, or your own, to discuss your company's requirements or for an estimate for a BIM trial.

Phone numbers for each office are shown above in my opening statement.
Please visit our website for details of each office address.
About DSG

DSG Quantity Surveyors is a company with proven drive and ability. Our success comes from an uncompromising attitude towards accuracy and reliability. During the last 12 months the company has focussed on developing our expertise around the BIM processes and solutions.

The following are some of the reasons we are a forward looking and growing business:
  • DSG attributes its success to a determination to learn from the mistakes of others. DSG listens to what companies have said about the pitfalls for QS consultancies and has developed a tick box methodology to help it avoid making the same mistakes.
  • The company brings the same mindset to everything it does whether cost plans, feasibility studies or contract selection. It takes time to carefully select the most appropriate contract for any given supplier.
  • DSG is meticulous with QA. It checks all the details.
  • When examining bids it carefully examines them to ensure all bids are compliant in terms of covering all the essential details.
  • DSG attends monthly meetings and ensures clients are paid on schedule to reduce risk and agree final accounts at the end of the project.
  • As a result DSG has experienced 20-25% growth year on year in a challenging commercial environment.
  • How to share DSGs success:
    - We look for an appropriate opportunity to demonstrate that we keep our promises.
    - Clients always deal with principals and everyone has access to the MD, Steven Gosling. The company makes quick decisions, for example, when additional resources are required.
