The statement from major property developer Quintain that suppliers need to embrace BIM to stand a chance of winning a part of its £8.8 billion project pipeline is either exciting or worrying, depending upon the current readiness of your business to initiate BIM projects.
Quintain's director of project management, David Crump, explains the firms position quite unequivocally when he says, "We probably need to insist that if you want to work with us you have to take the BIM concept on properly."
And that's just about where we are in terms of BIM adoption. The Government's deadline of 2016 may still be some way off, but that doesn't mean the major players are going to stand still. They can see the change is coming and are determined to move ahead more quickly in order to position their businesses to take a slice of what they hope will still be a very substantial and lucrative public sector pie.
However, the old chestnut of spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt isn't really how we will move forward collectively. To be fair David Crump acknowledges this by adding the reassuring caveat, "We will work with you to do that."
We've long talked about collaboration and the need to work together to embrace the opportunity of change and that's just what we're doing at DSG. To that end we've commissioned a series of instructional videos that demonstrate the features of BIM software by stepping you through individual aspects of a sample project. In our case we've used Vico Office but the principles remain the same for most BIM solutions. By bringing the software to life in this way we believe we can show how it's much more than a necessary evil and can add productivity and profitability to your business.
You can view the first video by following the link in this email. We'll be issuing a series of videos over the weeks and months ahead so please let me know if there are any subjects you'd like us to cover and we'll do our best to address them in future issues.
