The reality of working with BIM software

Greetings!

We have spent time in our last few emails looking at the implications and issues surrounding BIM, especially how it will affect the way we work together as architects, quantity surveyors, contractors and of course with the end customer - and there's no doubt that BIM will create a sea change in our industry. However, as the prospect of working on live BIM projects draws closer for many of you, it's now time to get back to the 'nitty gritty' of working with the software that we need to deliver the many benefits that it promises.

You may know that we have invested in a BIM solution from Vico Software, just one of several solutions available today. We're not specifically seeking to promote Vico as the solution you should choose, but we're confident that the experience we've gained whilst working with it enables us to offer some insight into the practical issues you will need to address when it comes to selecting a solution for your business.

For a start, how much will it cost? It's not just a matter of the price of the software. You may well find, as we did, that you need to upgrade your server and other hardware. Perhaps your version of Windows will need to be updated. Or does your supplier offer a cloud-based version? Then there's training and the inevitable lag as employees get up to speed on projects, possibly requiring some time to be written off as un-billable.

But before you even choose a software solution you'll want to know its capabilities. What can it do in reality during a live project? That's why we've put together a series of video demonstrations that each address a specific functional area of BIM software, showing it in use during the various stages of a project. We'll be rolling them out to you via email and the web over the coming weeks and over time they will form a comprehensive overview of how your people can use BIM software in practice.

The first installment will be released via our next email in a fortnight's time. Look out for it and, in the meantime, if you want to find out more about BIM or discuss its implications for your business or a specific project, please visit our website or contact us by phone or email. Read all about it: advanced reporting

One of the most obvious advantages of BIM technology is that we can see the building before a single piece of ground has been broken, enabling us to work with the client to visualise the way it will function in day-to-day use: something that was almost impossible using traditional 2D drawings.

However, before we move onto individual BIM software features I though it was worth a quick overview of some of the powerful reporting you'll be able to benefit from. Today the ability to produce accurate reports is a valuable aspect of our role and this is something that will become much more important as we collaborate more closely on BIM projects.

Keeping everyone informed and up-to-date is essential and producing reports at various stages of the project will help ensure that there are few, if any, unexpected surprises down the line. So imagine the flexibility of creating any type of report, customisable to your existing company style.

Bill of Quantites report

That's just what we can do with Vico software, drawing on the rich database of assets it holds about each project. The information you'll need to compile will of course depend upon your involvement as architect, QS or contractor, but here are just some of the reports you can easily extract. The list isn't exhaustive, but what it shows is how BIM covers data across the life-cycle of the project - and with 6D BIM and beyond, possibly the life-cycle of the building. But that's a subject for another time!

Typical BIM reports:

  • Quantity takeoff Reports with the total quantities per takeoff item
  • Quantity takeoff by locations showing how materials are consumed across the jobsite
  • Project cost for estimates, cost variance etc
  • Visual budget reports showing the current state of the project versus the target cost
  • Flow line reports as a visual representation of the schedule, clearly showing productivity rates
  • Cost and resource loaded schedules for communicating with the building owner
  • Control charts to monitor the percentage complete for the various trades
  • Cash flow reports at any time during construction Report production options

So you can see how much we can achieve with BIM using Vico software and we'll be highlighting just what DSG can provide to architects, contractors and their clients over the coming weeks. It'll be a fascinating insight into the working world of BIM and will help show you how it can transform the efficiency, agility and service levels of your business.
