BIM Based Estimating

The Way Forward with DSG

Greetings!

David Tedridge (right) senior QS at DSG Quantity Surveyors with Don Henrich, Co-Founder of VICO, at the recent User Group Seminar

There is a lot of conjecture and a good deal of confusion about what Building Information Modelling (BIM) will really deliver to the construction industry, with different levels of understanding and expectation resulting in a lack of clarity regarding the benefits it will bring. At DSG we have moved beyond theoretical discussions and invested in software and training to ensure we are not offering 'Hollywood BIM', but a real option for firms looking to realise the advantages of this major development in our industry. The following is the first in our series of email introductions to a working and deliverable BIM solution.

How Does BIM Affect Me?

Estimators are the backbone of any construction firm. The profitability of every project relies on the accuracy and thoroughness of their work. If they miss any portion of the scope the entire bid is at risk.

That scenario doesn't change with BIM - we just make it very visual and very comprehensive. Now estimators can work with the assurance that they have not missed one iota of scope.

Here's how:

Quantity Takeoff: The DSG quantity surveyor will liaise with all parties to develop and issue a complete and comprehensive final bill of quantities. The BIM process of working out bills of quantities now uses specialised software which we use to read the elements of a 3D building design model. During this process there are also indications of potential clashes that may affect the actual build. Our quantity surveyors can report these back to the architect/contractor for remedial building design changes.

Cost Planning: Using our BIM software we can produce cost plans from early concept design stage models, identify and track changes as the model develops. We are able to provide both architects and contractors with a 3D visualization of the cost plan and to have a more accurate understanding of the effect of a specification change and to alert the project stakeholders when a design change impacts the cost, and by how much - and being able to do so almost immediately.

Building Information Modelling: BIM is one of the most important changes to the construction industry for years. At DSG we are able to visualize a project and uncover the answers to key questions such as, "What happens to the cost and schedule if the design changes?"

You'll see the investment DSG has made in supporting you and invite you to take advantage of the many resources we have available NOW! In the following weeks and months we will be expanding on the individual elements of the BIM process as it affects the subject of bills of quantity and the knock on consequences to project design and planning.

About DSG

DSG Quantity Surveyors is a company with proven drive and ability.
Our success comes from an uncompromising attitude towards accuracy and reliability. During the last 12 months the company has focussed on developing our expertise around the BIM processes and solutions.

The following are some of the reasons we are a forward looking and growing business.
  • DSG attributes its success to a determination to learn from the mistakes of others. DSG listens to what companies have said about the pitfalls for QS consultancies and has developed a tick box methodology to help it avoid making the same mistakes.
  • The company brings the same mindset to everything it does whether cost plans, feasibility studies or contract selection. It takes time to carefully select the most appropriate contract for any given supplier.
  • DSG is meticulous with QA. It checks all the details.
  • When examining bids it carefully examines them to ensure all bids are compliant in terms of covering all the essential details
  • DSG attends monthly meetings and ensures clients are paid on schedule to reduce risk and agree final accounts at the end of the project.
  • As a result DSG has experienced 20-25% growth year on year in a challenging commercial environment
  • How to share DSGs success:
    - We look for an appropriate opportunity to demonstrate that we keep our promises
    - Clients always deal with principals and everyone has access to the MD, Steven Gosling. The company makes quick decisions, for example, when additional resources are required.
