Estimators are the backbone of any construction firm. The profitability of every project relies on the accuracy and thoroughness of their work. If they miss any portion of the scope the entire bid is at risk.
That scenario doesn't change with BIM - we just make it very visual and very comprehensive. Now estimators can work with the assurance that they have not missed one iota of scope.
Here's how:
Quantity Takeoff: The DSG quantity surveyor will liaise with all parties to develop and issue a complete and comprehensive final bill of quantities. The BIM process of working out bills of quantities now uses specialised software which we use to read the elements of a 3D building design model. During this process there are also indications of potential clashes that may affect the actual build. Our quantity surveyors can report these back to the architect/contractor for remedial building design changes.
Cost Planning: Using our BIM software we can produce cost plans from early concept design stage models, identify and track changes as the model develops. We are able to provide both architects and contractors with a 3D visualization of the cost plan and to have a more accurate understanding of the effect of a specification change and to alert the project stakeholders when a design change impacts the cost, and by how much - and being able to do so almost immediately.
Building Information Modelling: BIM is one of the most important changes to the construction industry for years. At DSG we are able to visualize a project and uncover the answers to key questions such as, "What happens to the cost and schedule if the design changes?"
You'll see the investment DSG has made in supporting you and invite you to take advantage of the many resources we have available NOW! In the following weeks and months we will be expanding on the individual elements of the BIM process as it affects the subject of bills of quantity and the knock on consequences to project design and planning.
