awards luncheon in February in recognition of the rail passenger excursions offered the past several years in the Williamsport area. The Pumpkin Express and Polar Express train rides occur during fall foliage and holiday seasons, and have become popular with area families, according to Vincent J. Matteo, Chamber President.
The train rides in the Williamsport area are a joint effort of the JRA, Penn Valley, and the LVRR, which is one of six short line railroads in the Rail Authority's system. Service on the line is provided under contract by a private operator.
Rail excursions are offered in several locations in Central Pennsylvania in partnership with the JRA and local sponsors, such as Chambers of Commerce or other community groups. Commenting on the award, Jeff Stover, Executive Director, JRA, particularly cited Dr. John Spychalski "...for his significant efforts related to the passenger excursions program..." Dr. Spychalski, represents Centre County on the Authority's Board and chairs the Passenger Excursion Committee.
This year, in addition to Williamsport, points of origin for rail excursions include Bellefonte, Bloomsburg, Catawissa, Danville, Lock Haven, Shamokin, Sunbury, and Williamsport.
