YOU COULD BE A WINNER!

Yes, you!
We had such fun doing it last month that once again we've randomly selected three names from among those on our mailing list, and we've hidden them somewhere in this newsletter. If you happen to see your name in print, you're a winner! It's that easy.
Please note: There is a deadline.

What the heck is Windows Explorer?
| For starters, let's not confuse Windows Explorer with Internet Explorer. The latter is your Web browser, of course, but Windows Explorer is the operating system's file and folder manager.
In fact, the one thing Microsoft should have done with Windows 7 is rename the tool to something like Windows File Manager. (At least it finally got a home on the taskbar, after years of staying relatively hidden.)
You've probably used Windows Explorer without even realizing it. Every time you open, say, your Documents folder, that's an instance of Windows Explorer. How about that?
The tool's fundamental purpose is to let you view, open, copy, move and otherwise manage your files and folders. So it is key for tasks like importing photos, copying files to a flash drive, setting up folders to keep your data organized, and so on.

PIN PROGRAMS TO THE TASKBAR
|
You'll love this tip - but only if you know just what the taskbar is! So first a brief description: the Taskbar is the long horizontal bar at the bottom of your screen. It is visible almost all the time, and has four main sections:
- The Start button, which opens the Start menu.
- The Quick Launch toolbar, which lets you start programs with one click.
- The middle section, which shows you which programs and documents you have open and allows you to quickly switch between them.
- The notification area, which includes a clock and icons (small pictures) that communicate the status of certain programs and computer settings.
|
All programs can be pinned to the Taskbar, which allows easy access to your favorites without having to use the Start Menu.
|
|
To pin a program to the Taskbar, right-click on the program or shortcut the program and in the menu choose the Pin to Taskbar option. Alternatively you can also drag the icon to the Taskbar.
If you want to remove a pinned program, right-click on the Taskbar icon and click Unpin this program from the Taskbar. Alternatively, you can also drag the icon off the task bar and then click Unpin this program from the Taskbar.
Any pinned or opened program on the Taskbar can be moved and arranged. Left-click on any icon on the Taskbar and drag it to the location you want it to remain.

COMPUTER HACKER PROFILE: GARY MCKINNON
 |
Gary McKinnon
|
There are definitely two sides to this story. Gary's and the U.S. govern-ment's.
Gary McKinnon, a Scottish (or British, depending upon the source) systems administrator and hacker who was accused in 2002 of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time", went unnoticed for years hacking NASA, the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force.
He admits to the hacking, but claims he was just looking for evidence of UFOs, anti gravity technology, and the suppression of "free energy". U.S. authorities, on the other hand, claim he

Q.
Sometimes I forget attachments on my e-mails AFTER I have already sent them. Is there any way of recalling an e-mail once I've sent it?
A.
Yes, but only if you are operating on an exchange server.
The recall feature in Microsoft Outlook tries to stop delivery and, optionally, replace an e-mail message that you have already sent to another Microsoft Exchange Server user within your organization. Message recall is available after you click Send and then realize that you forgot to attach a file, include information in the message, or want to revise what was originally sent. You cannot, however, recall messages sent to e-mail addresses outside your organization; and it won't work if the recipient opens his or her mail right away.

BUMP IS AN
OFF-THE-CHARTS COOL APP
Created by Bump Technologies, the company that Google recently purchased for an undisclosed price (probably over $100 million - kaching!), this app - the 8th most popular free app of all time! - actually allows two smartphone users to physically bump their phones together to transfer contact information, photos and files to each other over the Internet. Bump also allows users to bump photos from a phone to a computer. It is free to download to both iOS and Android operating systems.
