TERMINOLOGY
WHAT IS DISK DEFRAGMENTATION?

Disk fragmentation is a tool of Windows operating system that improves a computer's performance by analyzing the hard drive and reorganizing data, placing them in one contiguous space, rather than being scattered - fragmented - all over your computer.  This allows program files to load faster & more efficiently, as the operating system does not have to read data from multiple locations, which can be very damaging to the hard drive.
disk defragmentation
The red bars, as indicated above, are the fragmented files, which is what the Disk Defragmenter utility corrects.
Think of it as a well-organized closet. You remove a box, use it, and toss it back on top of the stack. After a while, you have a disorganized pile of boxes. Defragging rearranges them so that things are put back in an orderly fashion--plus, you have more room for new stuff.

Defragment your computer  regularly to keep it running in prime condition and ensure your PC has the longest life possible. Utilizing this tool to consolidate your files and folders will prevent new files from being fragmented when saved in your hard drive.

INTERNET SECURITY THREATS
CYBERCRIME STORY:
cybercrime2
How does cybercrime affect people?  Check out this real-world example offered by the Symantec Norton Antivirus website.

Sandra's Story:

Sandra is a human resources professional who lives in Miami, Florida.  She has used a computer in her job for more than 10 years.  At work, her computer is maintained by her organization's IT department, and she has never experienced any security problems with the computer in her workplace.

cybercrime
Sandra considers herself to be computer savvy and believes that she is at low risk of online fraud for the following reasons:
  • She never shops online because she doesn't want to risk exposing her credit card information, and she doesn't like the idea that data about her purchases might be stored and used to make a profile of her likes and dislikes.
  • She uses her home computer only for personal e-mail with friends and family, to surf the Web for information about new developments in her field, and to do banking once a month via her bank's website.
  • Occasionally she looks up other things on the Web, but not often.

Sandra's situation seems safe enough, right?

Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving.  Continue Reading

QUICK TIP #2

Use the Google Search engine
as a calculator by typing
a math problem  in the search.
For example, typing
100 + 200 will give you
the results as 300.
Use X or * for multiplication
and  \ for division.

 Q
Should I allow
Internet Explorer to remember my passwords?

A.
I use several computers at various locations, so whenever the browser asks me to remember the username, I always say "no."  If someone else used my computer and the passwords had been stored, that person could access my accounts.  I definitely would not want someone automatically going to my bank account or accessing my email.  Think twice before
you ask the browser to remember your passwords.  There are some password apps now that remember all your passwords with one master password.  I am still not recommending these apps.  I do not want all my passwords stored in one file on the Internet.

See article below about saving passwords in Mozilla Foxfire.

USING TECHNOLOGY
COSTLY, BUT COMMON I.T. MISTAKES - PART II

We have been in the IT service business for over 35 years, and we have noticed several mistakes or oversights that many small businesses tend to make.  Whether it is the result of misinformation (being sold the wrong solution) or the lack of information (simply not knowing what you need), the consequences are the same, and they can be costly.  we will cover our list of 10 items - in no particular order or priority - over the course of the next several issues.  So without further ado, on to item #2.

#2 - Many businesses make the mistake of not providing regular software & hardware maintenance for their computers and/or servers.

It is not uncommon for people to think that once their computers or servers are set up and operational, there is nothing further to be done, of course until such time as it breaks down.  And it ultimately will - sooner than later.  Think of buying a new car, but never taking it for a tune-up, oil change or maintenance of any kind.  Your car isn't going to last you long or function optimally with that kind of treatment - and neither will your computers or servers.  Continue Reading
