TERMINOLOGY
What is VoIP?

If you've never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol.   It is also referred to as IP Telephony or Internet Telephony,  and it is a method for taking analog audio signals, like the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted  over the Internet.

How is this useful?  VoIP can turn a standard internet connection into a way to place free - or at least substantially cheaper - phone calls.

ASK THE PROFESSOR

Cecile Bendavid
Cecile Bendavid

Professor of Computer Science - California State University Northridge and Director of New Business Development for CEO Computers.

Q.  How can I save a file as a PDF in Microsoft Office?

A.
You will not believe just how easy this is to do!

But first things first:  JUST WHAT IS A PDF FORMAT AND WHY IS IT USEFUL?
Portable Document Format (PDF) ensures your printed or viewed file retains the formatting that you intended.  If you have a file that you want to share with others but do not want them to change the format, you may want to save the file as a PDF.  Contracts, agreements and even invoices for example would probably do well to be saved in PDF format.

USEFUL TIPS
HOW TO FILL IN DATA
AUTOMATICALLY
IN EXCEL

If it saves you time, it saves you money!

If you use Excel and you don't already know about the AutoFill feature, this should be of special interest to you.  AutoFill is one valuable tool that will save you both time and tedium when it comes to entering any data into your worksheets that is consecutive or sequential in nature.   That means numbers, letters, days of the week, months, years, etc., all can all be entered automatically.

Microsoft Excel is an incredibly
powerful
spreadsheet program
that millions of people use.
It has so many tools in it that
even the experts don't always know
th
e shortcuts.  But just knowing a few
tricks  can vastly speed up - and
simplify - your workflow and that of
your employees.  To this end, our
resident Professor Cecile
Bendavid
offers courses
(which include one hour of lab) on
Excel that cover introduction,
 formulas, charts, formatting and
 lots of time-saving tips
(just like the above) for both the
beginner and the advanced user
alike.   Feel free to contact us
 for more information.
Remember: when you save
time, you save money!

Next Generation Texting

Information from the Los Angles Times Sunday, May 12 edition.

A relatively new program called WhatsApp is changing the way people text on their cell phones.  For $1 a year, you can have a subscription to text with your cell phone.

MessageMe, a free app, launched in March 2013.  A week later it had 1 million users.

Kik, a Canadian company, has 50 million users and adds 200,000 users each day.

Messages sent using the mobile apps that are offered by third-party developers and downloaded to smartphones are not limited to 160 characters the way text messages are.  They enable users to be more creative with scribbled notes, doodles, and emoji pictograms that express thoughts and emotions that the typed word sometimes cannot.  Some apps are adding games and other distractions to hold people's attention even longer.

MessageMe's CEO predicts that mobile messaging apps will eventually shove aside other forms of electronic communication and that texting, like snail mail, will become more of a utilty.

Mobile messaging apps work like this:  Users download the app to their smartphone and set up a personal profile.  They invite friend and family to download the app to their devices.  Then they send one another elaborate messages, which travel over Internet data networks, not over cellular networks the way standard text messages do.
