Microsoft Office Tips

Written by Mark Kaelin, TechRepublic, March 19, 2013 and edited by Cecile Bendavid

Microsoft Office 2013 has some new features that you may want to take advantage of once you learn about them.

One of those new features is the ability to add useful apps directly into Word, Excel, etc.

Adding an app to Office 2013 is relatively straightforward. Navigate to the Insert tab of the Office Ribbon and look for the tile called "Apps for Office" Apps for Office Office 2013 aps

Click on that tile and click the See All item in the dropdown list.  From here, you will have to visit the Office Store in order to find an app to install.

Once at the store you will see a number of available apps - many of them are free (for example, a dictionary ap).  Click the app, and then click the Install button. You'll be asked to confirm the installation.

The next time you go to the Apps for Office tab, click the See All item again. Click your app and then click the Insert button.

INTERNET ABUSES & HAZARDS

What is Internet abuse?

Internet abuse is an activity that involves the use of the Internet in an abusive manner. It consists of threats and harassment, viruses, spamming, port scanning, hacking, DOS attacks, and copyright infringement.

How do I report an incident of Internet abuse?

In order to report an Internet abuse, it is recommended that you provide evidence in the form of a firewall log or e-mail header.

The types of Internet abuse that requires evidence using an e-mail header are threats and harassment, spamming, and phishing e-mail. Follow the steps below to report the incident:

  1. Examine the e-mail header. The e-mail header information is necessary to identify where a message originated from.
  2. Locate the offending IP address. Read the e-mail header from the bottom up. The first "Received" line should indicate the IP address and timestamp. The IP address and timestamp should be included in the complaint.
  3. Determine who is responsible for the IP address. Go to http://whois.arin.net and enter the offending IP address into the ARIN WHOISRWA search box. Most organizations have abuse contact information listed unter the Point of Contact section.
  4. Send the evidence to the organization responsible for the IP address.  Report the incident to the owner of the IP address. Be sure to include in the complaint the full e-mail header.

What should I do if I am threatened over the Internet (via e-mail, chat, or other form of online communication)?

If you are threatened over the Internet:

  • Do not respond to the threatening or dangerous e-mail, chat or other communications.
  • Do not delete the offensive or dangerous e-mail. Instead, turn off the monitor and contact local law enforcement.
  • Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency, as you would any other crime committed against you.

Keep Your Computer in  Good Health

The following is a few steps to speed up any computer specially in case of slow startup.

1.Apply Operating systems and application programs (Microsoft Office, Java, Adobe, updates especially if there is a Service Pack.

2.Uninstall unnecessary programs that you have previously been downloaded or installed. Clean up any files you are not using. Clean up the temp files, cookies and cached files. You can use disk clean up tools.

3.Defrag your hard drive once a month.

4.Find out about the features of your Antivirus and how much resources and memories they take. If you do not need them disable them.

5.Learn what is running in the background. You can run Msconfig to know what programs are running in startup. You can easily disable them. Type msconfig in run and select startup tab. Make sure you only disable items that you are sure about. If a program does not work you can go back and enable it.

6.Use caution when you use utility programs for cleaning up registry and cookies, etc. We recommend CCcleanr which is free download.

7.Adding extra memory is always a winner. You have to make sure you have to the available slots.

8.Dusts in the fan and inside the computer is a major culprit. Opening up the computer and dusting it off is always recommended.

9.If all fails or your computer is over 3 years old and you want to keep it, or you have previously infected with virus, it is not a bad idea to reformat and reinstall.

Q.   Should I upgrade to Microsoft Office 2013?
A.  The questions is not if you should upgrade, but when should I upgrade.  You will eventually need to upgrade as your current version will eventually no longer be supported by Microsoft.  (Windows XP and Office 2003 have an April 2014 end date).

The easiest upgrade is when you purchase a new computer - it probably will come with a 30-day trial that you can extend at the end of the 30-days.

The next choice is to study the different plans to purchase Microsoft Office (pay for the system up front, pay an annual fee, or pay for a student/ university version.  All plans have advantages.  For example, you can pay $99 a year and receive five licenses for home use. Student and University licenses are very reasonable.  Business use has several plans available that will be discussed in future columns.

In addition to all the features that any other to do list app has, 24me can also automatically tell you about things you need to do. It can notify you about your financials, service providers, friends, and other errands. It can even take care of some of those responsibilities for you.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. You can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.
