The Path from U.S. Preventive Service Task Force Recommendation to Implementation

This summer, the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force released its draft recommendation for preventive screenings that have the potential to help current and former smokers at high risk for lung cancer, proposing that clinicians provide low-dose computerized tomography ("CT scans") to eligible patients. This announcement marks a significant shift in how lung cancer screenings are integrated into the nation's preventive health system.

On Sept. 10, 2013, Legacy, along with Lung Cancer Alliance, both long and vocal proponents of such screenings, will host a round-table discussion as part of the Kenneth E. Warner Series Lecture aimed at demystifying lung cancer screening.

Participants can apply for CME/CEU credit.

Objectives:
  • Provide the national public health community with accurate information about the efficacy and significance of lung cancer screenings - including how to educate members of the public of their risks and ensure that they have information about where to be screened responsibly.
  • Discuss next steps for national public health and public policy decision makers, including tobacco control and community level advocates who are at the frontline in efforts to stem the deadly tide of tobacco.
  • Identify areas of common ground where the tobacco control community and proponents of lung cancer screening can work together to sharply reduce tobacco related deaths from lung cancer.

Moderator: Cheryl Healton, DrPH, President and CEO, Legacy
