Message from the President
This November, we marked the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout®, which gives millions of Americans a motivation to finally quit smoking for good. Probably more than ever, smokers can choose from a number of resources to help them address one of the toughest addictions out there. Just this month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched BeTobaccoFree.hhs.gov, which includes a comprehensive "one-stop-shop" for tobacco information. This resource includes the most current information on tobacco, federal and state laws and policies, health statistics, and evidence-based methods on how to quit.
Additionally BecomeAnEX.org, a quit smoking program spearheaded by Legacy, gives smokers tips and tools about how to quit effectively, in an effort to help them re-learn life without cigarettes. BecomeAnEx.org allows smokers to join an online community where they can find social support, learn about their smoking triggers and follow a step-by-step comprehensive plan to quitting. The campaign has already helped more than half a million users since it debuted in 2008.
Whichever resources your organization promotes, we thank you for your efforts and appreciate the opportunities to work together to help more Americans live longer, healthier lives.

Honoring Those Affected By Lung Cancer in November

November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time for the nation to recognize those who've tragically lost their lives to the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This month also serves as a time to increase awareness that cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. In fact, nearly 75 percent of lung cancer deaths in women and almost 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in men are a result of smoking.
At MyLegacyStory.org, visitors can share how tobacco has impacted them. In one touching story this month,
Elizabeth W. shares how her father - a Navy World War II Veteran - lost his battle to this devastating disease. Please read her story, share yours and take action today. |

Addicted and Conflicted: New National Survey Shows Teens Want to Quit Smoking
According to a new survey conducted by Legacy and Seventeen magazine, nearly one-in-ten teen girls in the United States are current smokers, but a majority of them want to quit. Researchers surveyed teen girls on their behavior, attitudes and opinions about quitting smoking, and found that 70 percent of these teen smokers want to quit. According to the new data, almost 60 percent have tried to quit, but less than half were successful. Among those surveyed, most who tried to quit found it was more difficult than they expected (52.6 percent); less than half (40 percent) were successful in their attempts. The survey also found that many of the teens who reported smoking identified themselves as social smokers, or someone who had merely tried smoking, while some reported that they started smoking because their friends were smoking and because they were curious. A small number of teen girls reported they smoked to control their weight.
The November issue of Seventeen magazine highlights the survey results. Read more here. |

truth tour Wraps Up Successful Summer and Autumn of truth-telling
Now in its 13th year, the annual truth yout h smoking prevention tour continues to be stronger than ever, exposing nearly one million teens and young adults to the truth about tobacco use and the marketing practices of the tobacco industry. During five months of criss-crossing the nation at music festivals, sports events and more, the tour van and crew made stops in more than 80 cities and 31 states. Appearances took place at venues and events where teens and young adults naturally congregate, including: the Vans Warped Tour®, an annual summer music festival; and the Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival, an annual hard rock/heavy metal tour. At each stop along the music tour, tour riders played games, held dance contests and judged sing-offs. Through these games and contests, teens could win truth-branded items including T-shirts, hats, shorts and skatedecks, each including facts about tobacco and fashion-forward graphics and designs. For the first-time ever this year, the tour also made stops at five East Coast and Southern colleges and universities featuring headlining bands Cobra Starship and Outasight.
A second truth crew - focusing on sports, gaming and entertainment - traveled with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD presents the Birdhouse Left Coast Tour 2012. The gaming tour also made stops at various Six Flags theme parks and several gaming-focused conventions including Gen Con Indy, Dragon*Con and New York Comic Con - large-scale events popular with gaming, pop culture, science fiction and fantasy aficionados.
These new efforts represent ways in which truth is expanding its reach in order to help more young people reject tobacco - finding new platforms in which to share its life-saving messages. Learn more about the tour at thetruth.com. |

Register for the December Warner Series on Tobacco and the LGBT Community
Legacy is joining forces with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to host a special Warner Series Lecture on December 11th, exploring the complex issues surrounding tobacco in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. In 1995, R.J. Reynolds created a marketing campaign targeting gays titled Project SCUM. Since then, what role has Big Tobacco played in the high rates of tobacco use in LGBT communities? Why do LGBT Americans smoke in disproportionate numbers to the general population? What initiatives have succeeded in reducing LGBT tobacco use? The discussion will address these questions and more as Legacy releases a new report, Tobacco Control in LGBT Communities. Event details:
Tuesday, December 11, 2012
3:30 to 5:00 p.m. EDT Human Rights Campaign 1640 Rhode Island Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20036 Reception to follow.
