SKOWHEGAN, Maine - Skowhegan Savings has awarded a $10,000 gift to Friends of Lithgow Library, Inc., an organization that supports Augusta's historic Lithgow Library and Reading Room. Its latest campaign is to fund, along with the city of Augusta, a renovation and expansion project that will preserve the 1896 structure while making it more accessible to the community.
"We greatly appreciate Skowhegan Savings contribution to our capital campaign," said Wick Johnson, Co-Chair of the Lithgow Library Capital Campaign. "Lithgow is a critical resource for the area's lower income residents. In addition to providing books, magazines and videos, it is a welcoming place for computer access, providing assistance with job searches and improving digital literacy."
The renovation and expansion project includes the construction of a brand new addition that will more than double the library's functional space, including additional space for children's reading and learning activities as well as a dedicated space for teens.
"This is a historical landmark, architectural marvel, and vital community hub," explains Meghan Loubier, Augusta Branch Manager at Skowhegan Savings. John Witherspoon, Skowhegan Savings President and CEO added "At Skowhegan Savings, we know that libraries create more vibrant communities and enhance opportunities to improve literacy. So when you have a library as amazing as Lithgow Library, with the programs they offer our young people, it's crucial that we provide our support."
Skowhegan Savings' charitable giving program makes donations to both large and small local non-profit and charitable organizations, with a focus on financial literacy programs and economic and community development, including programs that promote job creation, business retention, business growth, and community enhancement.
