Hurricane Sandy Hits CPC's Jacob Riis Child Care Center Hard
The CPC Jacob Riis Center is located in the Jacob Riis NYCHA Houses in Alphabet City. The program provides multicultural, educational, social-emotional, developmental, recreational and nutritional services to 20 infant/toddlers and 34 pre-school students daily. The storm surge from Hurricane Sandy brought 2 feet of water into the Jacob Riis Childcare Center. The flood water has damaged the classrooms, bathrooms, office space, and supplies in the program site - totaling upwards of $46,000 in damages. Although the staff has done surface cleaning to the site there are still concerns about the cleanliness of the center for the children. Many of our parents are highly dependent on the childcare services provided at this center, which allow them to go to work and pay their bills. Many have already missed close to a week of work due to the hurricane - a serious hit for many of these low-income families that live pay check to pay check. The Jacob Riis Center is currently operating under harsh conditions to provide services to students whom we have not been able to relocate to our other childcare centers. Extensive cleaning and replacement furniture and supplies are needed in order for CPC to provide quality service and a safe learning environment for their 54 students.
CPC is collecting the following items to help the Jacob Riis Center get back to serving the community at full capacity:
- Toys (ages 1 - 5, new & gently used)
- Diapers & Baby Wipes
- Children Books (ages 1 - 5)
- Art Supplies
- Plastic Storage Bins
- Cleaning Supplies (gloves, trash bags, Pine-Sol, Clorox Wipes and Spray)

CPC Students Go To The Circus Thanks to the Ong Family Foundation
Attending the circus is a New York tradition and one of the events that many children look forward to each year. It is also one of the inventive ways CPC's Child Care division is introducing art enrichment to their students. On November 14, 2012, CPC's Child Care programs will attend the Big Apple Circus - a trip made possible by a generous donation from the Ong Family Foundation.
"The Pre-School and the Afterschool division would like to sincerely thank the Ong Family Foundation for donating these circus tickets for children and their parents. We know that this will be an experience that they will remember forever," says Ms. Mee Ling Lee, Director of Garment Industry Day Care Center.
The Ong Family Foundation has always been a strong supporter of CPC's Child Care division. In 2003, the Foundation donated playground equipment for the Chrystie Street Day Care rooftop playground, which is still enjoyed by children today. Additionally, the Foundation has been sensitive to the needs of staff through their establishment of the Karen Liu Child Care Staff Development Fund, which provides meaningful development and training for CPC's Child Care division employees.
CPC would like to kindly thank the Ong Family Foundation for their generosity, support and continued investment in our community. | | |
