Question:

Hi Joe,

For some reason we have been getting a significant
amount of grow equipment submitted

Grow Equipment
to our property room, including lamps, ballasts, grow lights, hoods, seed trays, hoses, timers, and various other garden accessories. As you can see we have completely run out of space and don't know what to do. Can you tell me what are other department's doing with this type of "stuff", since it never goes to court?

Thanks, Gotta- Lotta Stuff

Answer:

Dear Gotta-Lotta Stuff,

This is probably the easiest question we have ever received. It's like every thing else we do in Property and Evidence, which is - Nobody does it the same. As we cross the county, the handling of Grow Equipment is always an issue that arises. We have seen some unusual solutions!

  • A few states have provided legislative direction by allowing officers to photograph, document and destroy upon receipt into the property room.
  • Some departments have an arrangement where photos are taken, and the equipment destroyed with the approval of the prosecutor and court.
  • Some departments photograph at the scene and leave it as they have no place to store it!
  • Some departments just retain forever, as no one will make the decision to purge.

What happens when the stuff isn't submitted to court as an exhibit? We just keep the stuff because we always have!

The options for removal from the property room after the cases are adjudicated are just as varied:

  • Some departments donate to local community colleges and in one case the lamps were give to the local zoo.
  • A few departments destroy during the gun destruction process.
  • Recently some agencies sell them through auction with companies such as Propertyroom.com.
  • Some agencies will destroy the lamps and hoods at auto-dismantler's or dump in the land fill after breaking them up.
One of the most interesting solutions we found in two states- They legalized marijuana! Both Washington and Colorado have seen a significant reduction in the amount of marijuana and Grow Equipment being submitted since it is now legal.

Regards,

Great Job - Scottsdale Police - Scottsdale AZ.

PHOENIX -- Daryl Donovan Cole Jr. stood before a judge Wednesday charged with three counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, and burglary.

Scottsdale police said the quick arrest is due to brand new DNA technology. "We can turn things around and in this case are able to get a violent predator off the streets," said Sgt. Mark Clark of Scottsdale police.

Officers said Cole forced his way into a woman's apartment early Saturday morning and sexually assaulted her.

By Sunday night, the forensics lab was able to match evidence at the scene to Cole's DNA that was in a database on a prior arrest for aggravated robbery. "We were able to get a known profile from the evidence sample by Sunday after less than 24 hours," said DNA specialist Vickie Beamer.

The brand new Global Filer Express Kit did the work in a third of the time. What would have taken 12 to 15 hours of non-stop work only took three to four.

Police arrested Cole on Monday.  This was the first time DNA technicians used the Global Filer Express Kit on a case and Sgt. Mark Clark said it is a great resource for public safety
