Question of the Month???

Ask Joe

Q Dear Joe,

I was recently assigned to the property room as the new sergeant to the unit. On my first tour of the facility I observed boxes and boxes of ammunition. I questioned the  two evidence custodians to what type of case the ammo was from. I quickly learned that the boxes contained ten years of ammo from various cases and they had no way to dispose of ammo anymore. According to them, a military base in the county used to help, but that service is no long available to us. Do you have any suggestions.

Sincerely,

Too Much Ammo

A Dear Too Much Ammo,

It's interesting that you ask about ammo. In the last month I have had at least four inquiries about the same topic.  Many states are clamping down with different environmental laws that are creating a quandary for many departments to dispose of their ammunition. Since we had so many inquires in such a short period of time IAPE sent out a survey to our members asking how their respective agency is  disposing of ammo.

Over 1100 departments replied to the survey. 73.7% of the departments were police, 18.6% sheriff's and the remaining were split amongst Federal, State Troopers, School Police and Crime Labs. The survey showed that 37% of the respondents were from departments of less than 50 officers and 49 % were in the 50 - 500 category and the remaining 14 % are from departments larger that 500.

It appears that there are a wide range of solution and  10% have no method to destroy which hampers efficient operations. For additional help always consider contacting your local  ATF office

Hope that helps!

Joe
