Hey Joe,

Our department is considering turning my position as the Evidence Officer into an Evidence Technician position to both collect and store evidence..  I just wanted to know your thought on one person being in charge of the property room including possibly  collecting, booking, storing and destroying the evidence.

Thanks,

Evidence Officer In Utah

letter A

IAPE Professional Standards Standard 1.10 Staffing - Organizational Placement states "The property unit should be organizationally separate from patrol and investigation functions. Patrol personnel seize and book most property/evidence, and investigating officers are generally responsible for the authorization to dispose of property or evidence".

We are opposed to the collectors being the keepers... Need to have a separation of duties... We generally need to have collectors (officers / crime scene personnel, keepers (property personnel) and the decision makers (detective) separated whenever possible.

There may be scenarios in smaller departments where combining job functions is required due to the size of the agency.

Good Luck, Joe
