FORWARD THINKING!

We have had such a sopping wet October this year! From the cancelling of lessons to the need for bought shavings and extra vigilance to keep the hay dry under the roof like a sieve... it has kept me hopping! The plants are thriving and there is a collective sigh of relief (and gratitude) across this land of enchantment... we have come through several years of drought. The water flows. Water is Life.

And life is love. Love flows here, too. We have worked, as a tribe, the past few months holding our dear Penny together! Her "report" is presented in this newsletter. Her story is one of perseverance and creativity. While most people would have euthanized her after the third re-injury of her tendon, we listened to her and stood by her. Our love for her kept us trying (and hers for us) and I stayed hyper vigilant to hear her if she decided it was time to go.

"Love is the active promotion of the well being of the love object."

And, our motto is scrawled across one of the tackroom walls:
"Just show up, be brave, be kind, rest, try again"

My thoughts tonight wrap around all the beings I have loved and do love. Just as water is essential for life, so is LOVE! Never apologize for loving, never feel embarrassed to love, always love unconditionally because it is not a commodity to be traded back and forth... Love is like that precious water; it flows.

Penny Report:

Here is our Penny doing well. This photo is from last week and it has been a long struggle getting to this point with her.

We have worked as a team to keep her alive during the spring while she lay on the straw for 20 hours of each 24 hour day... kept her hydrated through a sizzling summer... now we work to keep her body functioning as her leg supports her better.

It has been a balancing act from needing to protect the injured leg, but needing to walk her to keep her back, shoulders and hips from seizing up. From Chiropratic adjustments to therapeutic massage, Reiki and magnets and cold laser treatments, we did everything possible! Our breakthrough came with a young man who is a gentle farrier willing to get creative on this mare's behalf.

Taran Rogers started with a backwards shoe to hang out past Penny's heels to keep her pastern and fetlock from touching the ground! (see photos)

I checked on Penny every 2 hours every night, sleeping in the straw with her some warm summer nights... I wrapped and booted and worked on that leg and the other 3 as well (they were now taking  extra burden!). She received slippery elm bark, vitamin E and selenium, rose hips, Himalayan salt, magnesium, Soloman's seal, Equine Saver supplement and a dark beer each night in a bran mash.

She got fresh watermelon, yams, carrots, pears, apples and bananas. She got Homeopathic Ruta Grav and Rhus Tox... most of these things are still a part of her daily care.

Taran got her in an egg bar shoe that just wasn't extended far enough, so our friend Bob Lee welded a shoe to Taran's specifications. We got it on her and Diane Hart of Hooves by Hart wrapped the hoof to keep the shoe in place. It takes a village! It takes a tribe.

Time will tell. Penny is walking well now, her tendons appear to have the chance to heal. We work on healing her bedsores now and actually have to calm her down sometimes when she feels a bit "too good". Her spirit is thriving and the other horses have totally understood why she was requiring most of our time, energy and medical funds.

And we do not neglect the other horses. All of the wonderful "beasties" here have their own set of needs and health requirements. As a Sanctuary, we depend entirely upon donations to care for the horses and 100% of all donations go directly to the care and well being of the horses.  You can help us by donating, every bit helps.

I could use more sleep these days!
I think resting and laughing really      are priorities for a healthy life. One  thing we are working on for Penny is  her ability to safely (& softly) lie  down to rest her legs and her body
Penny has a bed of straw... I spend  a good amount of time nodding off  in a chair... but, sleep is sleep  wherever it can occur!
Forward Thinking

How we face each day really does determine the outcome. If I wake up defeated, I will be of no use to these precious animals.

If I choose to see the progress and the positives, no matter how small they may be, I will empower the improvement of my day.

And I dance. This life is a flow of movement, thoughts, emotions, water, air, sounds and sights... totally dynamic, nothing is static for long! We must participate.

I rode a horse in Hawaii that SO reminded me of a very big, plump Penny! He was a gelding, but he had a similar gentle, sassy demeanor and I loved him for the excellent experience he shared with me! Open yourself to the flow of experiences and see through eyes of love.

Onward!
