Across The Country!

I am watching our newest equine arrival as he plays "grab my nose" between fence boards with his neighbor. Abe arrived last month - from Maine! His human was going to University and could not continue caring for him but was not willing to just sell or share him into a situation where his safety or well being might be questionable.

Enter Dharmahorse... this young woman was a student of mine and she knew and loved us. She offered her beloved companion to us, for Sanctuary, for a horse to help us teach others, for a tribe member for life. It is an honor and it is great responsibility. Abe has Cushings syndrome. Abe is on a medication (made from Ergot, a fungus) that must be continued his entire life. Abe is safe here.

Abe has to be body clipped regularly and his adjustment to the high desert has been surprisingly easy for him. He weathered his long journey across the country well (on the most impressive of transport vehicles!) and the most amusing thing about him here so far was his acceptance of a flapping coolaroo shade beside his roof (it was there when he arrived) and his spin/leap/gasp reaction to my brother's laundry on the line behind his pen!! (it was not there when he arrived).

Another shocking experience for Abe came after being turned out in the big arena early one morning when the moon flowers were still in bloom (they close up as soon as the sunlight hits them).

His expression was priceless as he walked up to them, snorting, being brave and obviously wondering what form of life these were!

HERBAL SOLUTIONS from Dharmahorse
Support Immunity Now to face the winter changes:

ALFALFA is a premier feed for horses that provides supportive minerals and the precursor to Vitamin A, Beta Carotene - LEARN MORE

ECHINACEA root (stronger) and leaf (milder) are strong immune system boosters and can be fed in dry form, added to the horse's bucket feed by the small handful (leaf) or tablespoon (root), once daily. You want to use this herb for 10 to 30 days, then pause, so that the immune system does not become dependent upon it. Do not feed Echinacea to any being with an auto-immune disorder. I also make a tea with the leaves or simmer the root into a decoction to add to the feed.

ANISE seed is used to prevent and to heal lung disorders, coughs and colics - SEE MORE

Penny This Morning

Every morning begins with checking Penny first, as soon as there is enough light to see. Most days, she had been lying down from the night. The past few mornings, she has been standing, looking toward the office bay window, waiting for me!

We had a scare a couple of weeks ago when her fetlock on the injured leg dropped to the ground! I got her sports medicine boot over her support wrap and called an old friend in Tucumcari. Jim is an international expert on hooves and he told me to get an egg bar shoe on her - he knew this was easier said than done, so he suggested duct tape and I proposed a regular shoe backwards. He said good idea.

I got that on her while she was lying down and it was brilliant. She could walk again. By some wonderful synchronicity, a young man who had worked on the Dharma Horses last year called to see if we needed anything! Taran Rogers came immediately and nailed that backwards shoe on. In another week, he brought a bar shoe and amazingly, held her up himself to get her leg lifted while she was standing! Deb and I helped support her. It takes a village... it takes a tribe.

Penny has been improving daily. Small increments, consistently positive, we are thrilled. And we comprises quite a group of dedicated "Penny helpers"!

So, this morning, Penny was standing at her gate at first light, determined to go OUT! Yesterday I had let her wander while I mucked her pen and (within only a minute) she had made her way almost to my front porch and was under the trees, eating lavender plants! Today, I led her to the big turn out, scattered hay for "grazing" and turned Dream Cat out with her. It was a very good morning.

You can help us with Penny's medications and supplements, Chiropractic and Veterinary bills and hoof care by donating to Dharmahorse Inc., a 501 c 3 non-profit. We are so grateful for all the support and 100% of every donation goes to the well being of the horses!

 The weather will be
cooling down on  this hemisphere -  this is a good time  to bring out rugs  and check them!  Also plan for the  covering of outside  faucets.
Riding Horses

Horses in a wild environment are in constant motion. Their bodies are made to be moving, it is essential for healthy heart, lungs, legs, gut and to keep lymph moving through the system.

While turning horses out is imperative to their well being, unless you have massive size fields, multiple paddocks or terrain changing tracks, the experience can become simply rote.

To ride a horse out in the open, on trails, across countryside is to connect with him and share that mobile, "wild" experience of moving and just being. Bringing the experience to your horse on a regular basis can set the rapport between you, strengthen your bodies and heal the emotions.

Exercise for all horses keeps the body oxygenated and this helps keep toxins and diseases from taking hold. "Opening the lungs" by deep breathing helps us all!

We wish you well. We hold this planet and all who fly with her in love & light.
