Love, Light and Layers

I find it particularly interesting that horses can express genuine, obvious love toward us and that many times, humans do not recognize it.  I have the unique opportunity to observe many horses and many people interacting and to see awareness (quite often) as well as unaware responses from the humans.

Horses seem so easy to read - to me. Is it because I grew up with horses? Is it because I have spent the great majority of my life in relationship with the neglected, abused and misunderstood?

Maybe that connection to and desire to heal the horses has made them transparent to me - and likely, me to them. I always feel that the Dharma Horses read my mind and that they must "talk" about me at night, probably rolling their eyes now and then. I also know for certain that they thank me dozens of times throughout each day. How do I know this? In the way they wait after we pass through a gate; in the way they shift to let me pass by while I'm mucking; in their nickers, their nuzzles, their lowering of heads and neck hugs - they are more expressive than some people!

They are loving beings. They respond to love.

My favorite definition of love is by Eric Fromm:
"Love is the active promotion of the well being of the love object."
Well Being is important here at DH.
And, our motto is scrawled across one of the tackroom walls:
"Just show up, be brave, be kind, rest, try again"

My thoughts tonight wrap around all the beings I have loved and do love. Just as water is essential for life, so is LOVE! Never apologize for loving, never feel embarrassed to love, always love unconditionally because it is not a commodity to be traded back and forth... Love is like that precious water; it flows.

LIGHT!

This time of year we get a lot of rolling storm clouds and alpenglow across our mountains. The light is refracted and bounced about so that multiple colors and intensities display through the evenings.

I am able to continue working for 16 to 18 hours in a day with the extended, summer light. And, with a new arrival coming this month to join the DH herd, I feel the extra drive to organize the stable yard and work on funds for the hay and herbs as well as ongoing care of the recently rescued Vega and recently injured Penny.

Our sweet Penny is looking at a year of recovery from torn tendons and she will not be ridden anymore, no matter how sound she may seem in the future. Michelle had taught her to ground drive a few months back, so Penny might be able to join us on trail rides (without a rider) or do demonstrations in the future if she seems to want the attention. Time will tell.

Penny injured her left front leg severely after two "explosions" in a disagreement with our pony over their fence and in a sadly inappropriate expression of excitement with just a leaping gallop.

Penny has great courage.
We hold her in Love & Light now as we support her legs and her spirit.

You can help us with Penny's medications and supplements, Veterinary bills and hoof care by donating to Dharmahorse Inc., a 501 c 3 non-profit. We are so grateful for all the support and every donation goes to the well being of the horses!

"On Horseback" by Mike Oldfield

Our newest rescue, the highly educated, incredibly sweet Vega is simply thriving here at DH with all of the love and kindness (and to think, he was going to be killed!).

I could use more sleep these days!
I think resting and laughing really      are priorities for a healthy life. One  thing we are working on for Penny is  her ability to safely (& softly) lie  down to rest her legs and her body
Penny has a bed of straw... I spend  a good amount of time nodding off  in a chair... but, sleep is sleep  wherever it can occur!
LAYERS

Lately I've been peeling away the things that are just not needed - those "onion" layers of distraction like whether or not my teeth are white enough or my boots are shiny or my truck washed and waxed.

I am clean, I am healthy, I am focused and the days just must be simple and organized or someone could suffer. In the heat now, if I forgot to keep water tubs full, a horse could be in real trouble. If I forgot to water the trees or put water around for all the little creatures, they could die. I feel like my life has great value if I only considered the providing of water throughout the day!

(side note: I'm an Aquarius - it figures!)

It feels like simplicity is the key to getting things in order and having healthy horses. It reminds me of my meditation practice and when I feel overwhelmed, I sit for a bit to find my center, then begin again.

We can all do things to simplify our days and what I am finding is that all the "stuff" that complicated my life was like the old dry, dead onion layers that covered the sweet, living center - the part that really matters.

Onward!
