Time and Time Again

I've seen several things change rather suddenly here at Dharmahorse. Our sweet mare Penny has sustained an injury that is a repeat of one that happened two years ago, yet seems more serious now than the last time. She is receiving the same treatments and support as before - and she made a full recovery that time.

Time will tell. Our hopes are high for her.

We became a 501 c 3, non-profit corporation which provides the opportunity for us to receive donations, grants and support for the good work we have been doing and my personal hope is for expansion down the line. I hope we can help more unwanted horses and introduce more people to the gentleness of the horses. I want to build a portable sling so that, should we ever have a horse arrive in the dying condition that dear Strawberry was in (RIP, Strawberry), we would have the chance to actually save him (at least Strawberry knew 48 full hours of unconditional, focused LOVE).

Our focus has always been on education - teaching unconditional love, kindness with the horses and equine care through natural, non-toxic methods. We had sponsored field trips for homeless and near homeless children and their families to give them rides on calm horses being led (we even had 14 - two year old kids one day!). We have life experience special ed young adults come out to learn horse care and help with chores. We are restarting the "Stablewomen Program" in July and hope to do a similar gathering for men by autumn. These programs have taken time, effort and money that we provided on our own. Now, the possibilities expand with our new status.

So, time and time again, I come back to the simplicity of feeding hay based, herb based diets; supplying "free choice" minerals; avoiding all processed feeds; letting hooves show me how they naturally need to be to support the horse; providing the basics of water, natural food, shelter (shade!), salt and LOVE.

It works. It really is simple. Penny needs some pain relievers to keep her comfortable, but the healing takes place within her own body's innate knowledge of how to heal and systems to address the causes of her troubles not to just mask the symptoms.
Our World, Our Attitudes
My working student and I had been ground driving Penny before her injury. I had been even considering teaching her to pull a cart. She was going so well on the long reins, it seemed that she might like to be driven, along with or even instead of being ridden.

But, what she can do is not as important as how she feels and what she wants for her life.

This has also been a theme for my philosophy on hoof care - how a hoof looks is not nearly as important as how it feels to the horse. Last year, I sent my student to ride in her first Horse Trials on one of my horses whose hooves looked rather odd and rough. My rule was that no one was to touch those hooves. This gelding was going sound, was comfortable and happy. I had learned, months before, that tweaking his hooves for how they looked could leave him barely walking!

Relationships
I keep learning, time and time again, that what matters with our horses is the relationship that we build. I watched a friend working with her mare today and felt such admiration for the trust between them and the prioritizing of that relationship.

She and I have talked at length about how a good disposition is the first thing we seek in a horse and how, if a horse fears us, we will never have a relationship (kinda like horses look for a good disposition in us! yet they have no choice or say about their humans...)

Relationships between people follow the similar dynamic that horse/human relating does:
  • If you are passive with a horse, he ignores you
  • If you are aggressive with a horse, he fears you
  • If you are assertive with a horse, he respects you
So, I believe we can all relate to the sensibilities of horses if we just consider how it feels to be bullied, to be confused or to be actually taught in a clear fashion.

I have had students tell me that their personal relationships improved after they began learning to communicate with horses! Clarity is clarity; consistency is consistency. Whether we are with a horse, human, dog or other being, we need both of those to truly communicate.

We are experiencing repetitive days of temperatures above 100 degrees and the nights are not cooling off as they had been only two weeks ago. Those of you in the northern hemisphere, stay cool, stay safe and HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE! Those of you in the southern hemisphere, stay warm, stay safe and HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE!

We are all in this together. May LOVE lead the way.

We wish you well. We hold this planet and all who fly with her in love & light.
