We had a horse colic a few days ago. This is a digestive disturbance, in this case, brought on by the changes in weather that caused less water consumption. Getting the horse, Majic, through it was a 48 hour project with a very happy ending.
Facilitating the healing and positive outcome was the use of watermelons - yes, melons - to add moisture to his gut. You see, they made the saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink", for a reason!
I had been making sloppy wet bran mashes with herbs and oil and probiotics for him to eat, but the feeding of juicy, sweet, slobbery watermelons was the clincher. He passed manure finally, relieving the dry impacted feces that caused him the pain and distress. He received pain killers and muscle relaxants - but the moisture getting into his digestive tract was the necessary healer.
The dear horse, Strawberry, who we tried to save from drastic starvation was kept properly hydrated (much to the Veterinarian's happy surprise) with the feeding of watermelons. While Strawberry was too emaciated to pull through and crossed the Rainbow Bridge (with loving assistance) after 48 hours of constant care - he devoured the sweet watermelons and seemed to know how much we loved him.
Water is life. Each animal requires water as a higher priority than food. Much can be done toward healing and support when water is provided and consumed - even when it comes wrapped inside a big, green and red melon. We are grateful for Majic's recovery. We are grateful to have known Strawberry, even though it was briefly and ended tragically - life and death are forever entangled as the markers of our embodiment and our return to Spirit. This is an amazing planet with amazing beings all around us. And, amazing healing foods.
I will never take watermelons for granted - they are good medicine.
