Letter from the Chair

What is the definition of community? While there are many definitions, the one I am most fond of is: "a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interest, and goals." I joined the McKinney Young Professionals within a month of moving to Texas. I didn't know a single soul in the Lone Star State.

I attended my first McKinney Young Professionals meeting in July 2011 and immediately felt a sense of belonging. While it took several months to build relationships with other young professionals, I knew that I had something in common with the other members of MYP: they were under the age of 40, interested in building new relationships, engaged in the community and professionals that live or work in McKinney. The McKinney Young Professionals has been more than just an after-hours organization for me; it has been my community in McKinney. MYP was my first step into McKinney. I have established exceptional professional relationships, made friends from within the organization, and have become more involved and invested in McKinney because of the opportunities MYP has presented.

I share this story because I want to encourage you to join us for our upcoming after-hours on Oct. 16, come open to building new relationships and don't be afraid to get involved in our community. MYP has provided me with a sense of community, and I hope that you can feel that with our organization when you attend our events as well.

I would like to encourage members to consider applying to the MYP Advisory Committee. We meet every other month to plan events and improve the McKinney Young Professionals. Please take a look at the application and qualifications below.

On behalf of the MYP Advisory Committee, please don't hesitate to reach out to me and provide feedback.

MYP Events in Review
  • McKinney Young Professional events have been nothing but successful and fun this summer. In June almost 30 of us were welcomed at Harry's at the Harbor to kick off our annual Christmas in July toy drive for CASA of Collin County. We partner with CASA to help restock toys and gift cards for all the children they help, and present them to the organization at the Chamber's quarterly luncheon in July. This year the support from the community and Chamber members was incredible ... we collected over 500 toys and $1,000 in donations.
  • August was another great after hours held at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club on Beacon Hill. They provided great food and beverages, along with prize drawings for brunch and rounds of golf. With over 31 MYPs and prospective members in attendance, a fun time was had by all.
  • On Sept. 12 the Holiday Inn & Suites - McKinney hosted our group and future members for our "Great Connections" networking lunch. Kami Irwin with Emerson Process Management and the MYP Professional Development Chair helped all 42 attendees make those "great connections" with a fun conversation starter. The room was buzzing and everyone was able to have one-on-one interaction before enjoying a Mediterranean buffet.
  • Mark your calendar for our Oct. 16 after hours. We are kicking off the Fall season with a Downtown Dash to connect with our City Council. Beginning at Gather, we will move on to The Pub and finish our evening at Churchill's. Register here and checkout the MYP Facebook page. See you there!

MYP was established in 2006 to provide a place where young professionals can connect with other young professionals who have one thing in common - McKinney! MYP is a diverse group working together to showcase McKinney as the BEST place to live, work and play. We provide members with opportunities to get in front of and build relationships with local community and business leaders. Not only does MYP give young professionals a voice - it gives them an outlet for affecting change in the McKinney community.
