LESSONS FROM ACROSS THE POND
Phillip Darnton is making the trip across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the 2014 National Bike Summit.

Darnton, executive director of the Bicycle Association of Great Britain, is ideally qualified to inspire, inform and entertain participants at the National Bike Summit in 2014. His background of corporate marketing, including 3 years as the CEO of Raleigh UK, and leadership of the UK's National Cycling Strategy Board and Cycling England over the past decade matches the unique blend of industry and advocacy leadership at the Summit. What's more, he was given the ultimate recognition of his work on the NCSB with the award of an OBE by the Queen.

Darnton will address the importance of messaging to our success. Drawing on the UK's experience of losing central government funding for bike infrastructure and education three years ago, he will share some of the lessons learned to help us move a cycling agenda forward at the national and local level. MOVING BEYOND THE 'BIKELASH'

So you've got yourself a bike lane. Great. But guess what you might also have? A bikelash!

From cranky columnists complaining about scofflaw cyclists to parking-obsessed NIMBYs who never waste and opportunity to remind you that "this isn't Amsterdam," the addition of a bike lane to your community can open up a Pandora's box of bike hate. But fear not!

Using the tools of social media, old and new journalism, and even improv comedy, changing the conversation and moving beyond the bikelash can happen faster than you think. You just have to help it along.

Bike-blogging duo Doug Gordon (BrooklynSpoke.com) and Aaron Naparstek (Streetsblog.org) will use their experiences over the controversy of the Prospect Park bike lane in New York City to show you how to beat the bikelash -- and have fun doing it!  Read more about this panel here. WOMEN'S FORUM: STEAL THESE IDEAS!
Women Bike aims to seed, support and spread initiatives that are increasing female ridership -- and we want you to "steal" some of the most effective ideas from across the country at the 2014 National Women's Bicycling Forum.

So don't miss the opportunity to tap into toolkits and lessons learned from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association's Women & Bicycles campaign, Girl Scouts on Wheels from Women BikePHL and Mujeres en Movimiento from WE Bike NYC.

After providing brief descriptions of their work in New York City, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, leaders will provide concrete, take-home resources that allow participants to "steal these ideas" and adapt them for their own communities.
