2014 Highlights

Profuture Club Engages Youth
Ashley Tufo, Emily McFarland, Lauren Choiniere and Grace Baugham

The Profuture after school club has been busy this year! The club, in its 4th year, is a collaborative effort of CATS and Gilbert H. Hood middle school. Club meetings and activities are co-facilitated by Kaitlyn Clarke, CATS Youth Coordinator, and Pam Richard, GHH Counselor. A few highlights of their activities include:
  • Creating a short video and posters sent to CVS as a thank you for removing tobacco products from their stores nationwid
  • Volunteering for the Derry Santa fund and at the annual Derryfest event
  • Creating a PSA at the DCTV studio about a tragedy resulting from distracted driving
CATS Responds to Heroin Crisis
Dr. Thomas Scott, Eric Spofford, Kimberley Haas

To raise awareness of the heroin crisis impacting Derry and communities across NH, CATS produced, in partnership with Derry Community Television, a series of shows that focused on the medical/recovery, family, law enforcement, and state medical examiner's perspectives. The series was made available as a pre-release DVD set at the recent Rockingham County Forum (December 10th) - stay tuned for the full release on the CATS YouTube channel. Read more.

CATS Supports NH Traffic Safety
Abby Plummer and Nicholas Bergstrom

CATS continues to focus on traffic safety topics from child passenger safety to distracted driving. Abby Plummer and Nicholas Bergstrom, seniors at Pinkerton Academy, help out at the annual NH Traffic Safety Conference in April sponsored by the NH Highway Safety Agency and supported by the Injury Prevention Center at Dartmouth. Abby supports the coalition's local youth driving safety efforts. Read more.

Safety Reminders

Driving Safety

Black ice, freezing rain, snow, and slush...we all know what driving in a New Hampshire winter is like. Slow down and take a few minutes to read these helpful Winter Driving Tips from AAA and the US Department of Transportation.

By the way, read these tips in the comfort of your home or office, not behind the wheel of your car.  There are three forms of distracted driving:
  • Visual - taking your eyes off of the road
  • Manual - taking your hands off of the wheel
  • Cognitive - taking your mind off of driving

Buyer Beware!

Providing alcohol to minors is ALWAYS a criminal offense, even in your own home. If you are hosting a party, be sure to supervise minors and monitor access to alcohol. Talk to other parents about preventing underage drinking. Learn more about NH's Party Host Liability Law.

Create a Rx Safety Zone

School vacation, visiting family, friends of friends - there are a lot of people coming into your home over the holidays.  Make sure your prescription drugs are not mistakenly or illicitly used!

Keep all prescription medicines securely stored.  Unfortunately, the bathroom medicine cabinet is usually not secured.
Track the quantity of your medicine so that it is easy to see if some is missing.
Got expired or unused medicine?  Drop it off 24/7 at the Derry Police Department's Rx Drop Box.  This is an anonymous and free service!

Don't live in Derry?  Find the town nearest you.

Don't Lose Hope

The Holidays are not joyous and cheerful for everybody. People may be lonely, unable to visit family, struggling with loss or finances, trapped in thinking about regrets...just about anything.  Reach out if someone you know is having problems.

We provide just a few of the many resources available. If you have a favorite resource that isn't listed, please share it with us. All suggestions will be reviewed for inclusion on our resource pages.
