March 2013

Dear Friends of CATS,

Spring is around the corner and with daylight saving time starting on March 10th we have extra hours of daylight to enjoy at the end of our day! After a long winter, which I personally hope is really over now, we can finally get outside for fresh air, exercise and think about how we can reconnect with our community and its many resources.

As I mention further in the newsletter we are so grateful for all the community support and assistance that helped make our move possible. There is a remarkable network in this community, as I am sure can be found in communities across the country, that really is the backbone for making the community a safe and healthy place to live.

Sometimes when life or work is busy we forget about the generous volunteers that are everywhere willing to lend a hand or help solve a problem - and they are only a call away. Or we forget that we can be a piece of the puzzle that helps to make the community whole and that piece does not have to be a big commitment, sometimes a tiny deed makes huge difference. As spring approaches please don't forget that your voice and your help, however big or small, can really make a difference to someone and to your community. Reach out and make a call and make a difference.

We Moved Our Office!
In February CATS moved its office from 11 Peabody Road to 1 Hood Road to the lower level of the Church of Transfiguration. The office provides a much larger area to accommodate meetings, workshops and other activities. We want to send a huge thank you to the many people who helped us during this move as we wouldn't have been able to do it without them!

Our thanks go to Stephen Dente of Simpsons Painting Inc. who donated materials, his expertise and labor to paint the new office along with fellow Derry Village Rotary Members. Rotary members gave up four Saturdays to help get the new office ready- a big thank you to the many members who helped! Frank LeBlanc, owner of American Pride Woodworking in Derry, and Josh Popky helped coordinate getting the space ready and moving all the office furniture along with volunteers from the Granite House, a sober living home in Derry. Of course Rev Ray Bonin and everyone at the Church of Transfiguration were wonderful to welcome us as new tenants. CATS is planning an open house once spring arrives and the weather improves- please stay tuned for the date!

Prescription Drug Drop Box Installed at Derry Police Department
Safely dispose of your unused or expired prescription medications! A secure prescription medication drop box is available 24/7 in the lobby of the Derry Police Department.  Anyone can anonymously drop off legal medications.  A separate container is available for sharps.  Individuals will not be recorded or questioned by the police.

The five National Prescription Drug Take Back events held in Derry during the last couple of years collected over 600 lbs of unwanted, outdated prescription medicines, removing the potentially dangerous substances from homes and access by youth in Derry.

CATS was pleased to be able to provide the permanent drop box as a gift to the Derry Police Department and the Town of Derry through a Drug-Free Communities Support Program grant from SAMHSA and the ONDCP.

Save the Date for the next National DEA Rx Take Back on April 27th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 pm at Hood Common in Derry.

Nutrition Awareness Month

"There's no one-size-fits-all way to eat that's right for everyone," says registered dietitian and Academy spokesperson Jim White. "In reality if the diet doesn't fit with your lifestyle and unique needs, it won't work in the long-term and can even leave you missing out on the nutrition you need to get you through the day."

"Americans have flexibility in making choices to create a healthy eating pattern that meets nutrient needs and stays within calorie limits."

White offers the following tips to eat right for your lifestyle:

Career. Busy work days and business travel can lead to on-the-fly meals.

  • For desktop dining, keep single-serve packages of crackers, fruit, peanut butter, low-sodium soup or canned tuna in your desk.
  • Always on the go? Tuck portable, nonperishable foods in a purse, briefcase or backpack for a meal on the run. Try granola bars, peanut butter and crackers, fresh fruit, trail mix or single-serve packages of whole-grain cereal or crackers.
Families. Caring for family, whether children, elderly parents or both, can be a handful. However, family meals allow parents to be role models to promote healthy eating. And, just because a meal is made quickly doesn't mean it can't be nutritious.
  • Keep things simple. Build a collection of recipes for quick and easy family favorites. Choose ingredients that you can use from more than one meal. For example, cook extra grilled chicken for chicken salad or fajitas the next day.
  • Ask for help. Get the kids involved making a salad, setting the table or other simple tasks.

 Operation Safe Commute

Remember to commute safely!

CATS supports the Derry Police and their Operation Safe Commute, a collaboration between state and local police to target aggressive and distracted drivers on the roadways of NH.

During commuting hours on designated days officers look for all aspects of unsafe driving in order to educate the public and reduce injuries and fatalities. It is important to take time to drive safely even if you are late for work. Remember to fasten your seat belt, drive at the lawful and appropriate speed for weather and roadway conditions, save your texting and cell phone use for when you get to your destination, and practice safe driving in all other ways. If you are stopped be thankful for the opportunity to learn a few safe driving tips that will help ensure you and your passengers make it to and from your destinations.

Youth News

The fourth in a series of workshops for the summer media camp graduates is coming up soon as well as a Youth in the Round teen panel, hosted by Pinkerton Senior Krysta Lewis.  The panel provides a forum for youth to discuss issues that they feel are critical to their health and well-being. The series will air on Derry's Cable access channel and copies of the show will be available. If you are a teen or know of a teen that might be interested in being a panel guest or might have ideas for a show please contact the CATS office.

The Gilbert H. Hood Profuture after school club continues to meet. If you are interested in the schedule or have a child at GHH who might be interested please contact Pam Richard at 432-1224 X 331.
