Youth Media Group Committed to Helping their Community

Graduates of the CATS summer media camp are currently learning how to create public service announcements about youth health and safety issues. Sean Zajac, video producer at the Derry Community Television studio, is leading the group in a workshop series that began in October and will go through the winter months. The group has selected bullying as an area of focus for their first PSA project.

November2012

Dear Friends of CATS,

Wishing you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday! If you are traveling for the holiday, buckle up for safety. Seat belts save lives! If you have young children in the vehicle be sure that their car seats are installed properly.

Holidays are wonderful opportunities for family members to connect. Research shows that mealtime is an excellent opportunity for strengthening family relationships. Children who have frequent family meals are more likely to do better in school, have improved self-esteem, and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking or illegal drug use. It is also an ideal time to share family stories and learn about a family's traditions and history.

Let's not forget the men and women who are serving our country in the military and those less fortunate who cannot connect with family and may not have enough to eat or a place to live.

It is a time to remember the many resources our community offers to help us all achieve healthier and safer lives and to protect and assist those less fortunate. Spread the word- help strengthen the community safety net by sharing with others those resources that you have found to be helpful in your life.

Take the Rx Challenge!

CATS was one of 37 nonprofits nationwide to be awarded a grant from the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation's Healthy Living Program to develop educational material about prescription drug abuse. CATS collaborated with students at the Manchester campus of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences to create scenario-based interactive challenges for youth and adults.  Click on the image above to go to the Rx Challenge page on the CATS website and explore the choices and consequences of each character's decision making. Resources about prescription drug abuse are provided on the page. Learn more.
