A Word From the President

Since our last newsletter we have had the honor of hosting not on  e but two distinguished politicians at our facility, Massachusetts State Senator Tom Kennedy and Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III.   If you feel that our government is out of touch with the needs of its people, lost its willingness to get anything at all accomplished and is just overall running in neutral I can assure you that ten minutes with either of these two individuals will not only prove those thoughts to be incorrect but restore your belief in  government.  While they each displayed a genuine interest in the overall operation of the company, the industries that we serve, and the products that we produce most noteworthy was the time they both took to speak with the employees on the shop floor.

Tom Kennedy was interested in learning more about our staffing needs and encouraging his constituents to pursue manufacturing degrees and careers.  He spent time with Sean, a Boston University engineering student and Kennedy constituent from North Easton, who is working with us as a summer intern.  Sean discussed the links between engineering and hands on manufacturing and the benefits this experience gives him in returning to the classroom in the Fall.  Senator Kennedy was fascinated by the wide variety of industries served by manufacturing.

Joe Kennedy spent a lot of time with John, an employee who was hired earlier this year through an On the Job Training Grant. Funded by the Department of Labor, and administered by the state of Massachusetts, this grant helped place the long term unemployed in training programs. Congressman Kennedy, being involved in votes related to these programs was looking to gather valuable information directly from the individuals participating in them.   John has been job shadowing and participating in Workforce Development training with NEM since January.  John was able to show Congressman Kennedy that he has learned to operate CNC equipment, inspect parts by taking measurements, and read blue print instructions.  Joe Kennedy is a strong supporter of STEM education and manufacturing and is the co-sponsor of the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act.

Jon

Senator Tom Kennedy visited NEM to tour our facility and meet with management team members. President, Jon Holbrook and Vice President, Paul Diamond led Senator Kennedy and his aid, John Duquette around the plant and explained the functions of the machinery and the processes in which the products are manufactured. Later Senator Kennedy was joined by Quality Manager, Frank Montgomery and Human Resources Manager, Paula Martel to discuss legislation directly affecting the manufacturing industry.

NEM Now ITAR Registered

We would like to announce that we have acquired ITAR Registration with the US Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC). ITAR regulations were designed to control the
information and materials of defense-related technologies. ITAR ensures that these  technologies are only shared with US nationals and persons with special exemption from the Department of State.

This registration, along with our ISO 9001 quality system, demonstrates NEM's commitment to  maintaining strict process controls, achieving continuous improvement, and advancing our growth as a valued contract manufacturer.

North Easton Machine Exhibits at STEM Event

North Easton Machine Company was a recent exhibitor at the Southeastern Massachusetts STEM Expo held at Bridgewater State University on May 21st. During the event Human Resources Manager, Paula Martel and Megan Hennessey, Public Relations Assistant, got the chance to talk with Massachusetts' educators about the need for qualified machinists in the pipeline. North Easton Machine displayed information about workforce readiness, their efforts to achieve STEM Goals, and had activities set up that could be integrated into any grade level's coursework. The Marshmallow Challenge, an activity focused on manual dexterity asked students to apply

strategies to separate marshmallows by color using chopsticks.  For the older students, the Blueprint Challenge, asked students to inspect small machined parts using a blueprint to determine flaws. Throughout the course of the event Paula and Megan got to interact with many different schools, other educational resources, and business partners from Southeastern Massachusetts, to create connections which we hope will open doors to students interested in working in precision production.

BP Advisory Board Meeting

Vice President, Paul Diamond attended the Bristol Plymouth Advisory Board meeting held in early June. At the meeting the board members discussed next year's CAD/CAM program.  The program has experienced a spike in student interest, resulting in the majority of students selecting the program as their first choice.  The program now has a waiting list for enrollments in the 2015 school year.

The shop is adding equipment with delivery of four new Sharp engine lathes with a fifth one on back order. The CAD stations will be getting new high resolution monitors. The shop instructors are working with students to fabricate tool racks and affix them to machines so frequently used tooling is close by the machines, emulating the lean practices most shops in the industry currently employ.
