A Word From the President

This month's newsletter focuses on some hot topics in manufacturing today, employment and training. The industry today is a buzz with the need for qualified workers. Low cost energy here in the United States combined with our ability to manufacture some of the highest quality products in the world are creating a bit of a "perfect storm". This perfect storm of economic conditions is leading to a second industrial revolution in this country. We are seeing a resurgence of many of the industries that only a few years ago were leaving the US in droves. This is not my father's or his father's industrial revolution. This is a high tech industrial revolution. My father sharpened his own tools by hand on a bench grinder by eye. He made fine adjustments on production equipment with a wrench and the tap of a ballpeen hammer. He used "Speedi Dri" to soak up the oil that no matter how hard he tried could not seem to be contained to the machine. Today's machinist uses disposable insert tooling, punches offsets into a computer and programs equipment using CAD models and 3D simulation programs. All this in an environment that is closer to a climate controlled laboratory than the shops of the last century. How do we train the worker of tomorrow to be successful in manufacturing in the 21st century? Equally important, how do we re-train today's workers to meet the needs of manufacturing in America today? While I am unable to offer a perfect solution to these issues, I hope you will take this opportunity to read the articles below to learn how here at NEM we are doing our part. We are featuring an article on Keith McCoy. Keith is a 22 year employee and a friend of all of us here at NEM. There is also a spotlight article on NEM in the Gateway Magazine. There you can learn about our humble beginnings. Just like HP, Apple and Amazon we too started in a garage! You can also read about NEM being approved for a "Hiring Incentive Training Grant". We are doing our part to hire the long term unemployed and re-train them for a rewarding career in the field of manufacturing.

Keith McCoy

Here at North Easton Machine we depend on our staff members to be the backbone of our organization. We expect a high level of job performance and the highest level of quality for each product made within our shop, and Keith McCoy has met these expectations as a vital staff member for over two decades.

"It's just the way I was raised. If you do something, you do it right and to the best of your ability. I have brought that mindset with me wherever I go, and I try to live up to the ethics my parents instilled on me at a young age," McCoy said.

Keith works in our CNC Lathe department, where we focus on large diameter materials. Our CNC Lathes are equipped with live tooling allowing us to cross drill, tap and mill complex shapes and features - all done in one step. Keith is crucial in helping the department develop programs and meet the standards we have set for our products. Being here for 22 years, Keith knows the machines inside and out and is always trying to create a quality product in a timely manner.

"North Easton Machine has been a loyal company to work for, in which I am surrounded with a great group of individuals. Jon Holbrook has always been respectful and allowed me to feel comfortable and confident in my place of work. My parents have always said to be loyal to your friends, and here at NEM I feel as though my employers are more like friends and I try to uphold their company values and be a loyal employee," said McCoy.

North Easton Machine Company is proud to have such outstanding employees and we look forward to achieving customers' needs while maintaining strong workplace values. Keith McCoy is an exemplary worker and his good work does not go unnoticed.

Hiring Incentive Training Grant (HITG)

North Easton Machine is proud to announce the approval of a Hiring Incentive Training Grant.  This grant, a program of the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund, provides direct cash grants to employers who hire Massachusetts residents who have been unemployed for 6 months or more, or Massachusetts residents who are military veterans (regardless of length unemployment). The purpose of the grant is to cover the costs associated with recruiting and training newly hired employees.

Eligible employers may apply for grants of $5,000 for each new hire who meets the HITG program requirements. Employers may receive up to $75,000 each calendar year. Once

approved, payment will be available to reimburse or pay for training costs once the new hire has retained employment for at least 120 days.

North Easton Machine looks forward to using this grant to pay for training such as OSHA safety, ISO procedures, and other CNC machine operator job skills for new hires who meet the grant criteria.
