A Word From the President

Greetings!

I would have to say, one of our greatest strengths here at NEM is maintaining consistency of process. It starts right from the beginning at contract review. Your order is entered into our ERP system where it is compared to our quotation and reviewed for any inconsistencies, deviations or added requirements. It is then reviewed by both our Quality and Scheduling Departments. Our QA department confirms the appropriate revision level, reviews quality history, verifies print clarity and checks for all necessary gages to properly inspect your components. Scheduling  then reviews our internal routing to confirm that the process will correctly manufacture the component being ordered within the time frame allotted. All drawing requirements, special customer requests or order PO requirements are noted and communicated to Manufacturing via our shop traveler. Only then will you, the customer, receive an  Acknowledgement that we have accepted and are moving forward with your order. That is only the beginning of our process controls. We maintain detailed instructions for every process required to produce every component we manufacture. The individual tools for each operation required to manufacture your component are detailed right down to the part numbers, inventory locations, and expected tool life.  Our automated wash system (that was highlighted in a previous newsletter) plays a large role as well in our ability to maintain process consistency. These tight controls, over all of the steps required to manufacture your components, allow us to not only maintain consistency but to continually adjust and improve each step of the process. While we do a tremendous amount of work the first time we get a new job, it is by repeating this process that the true benefits can be seen. By partnering with our customers to repeatedly process their components we are able to derive the maximum benefit from these controls and maximize product quality while minimizing cost. It is this process that allowed us to achieve a 99% quality rating for 2013. If you think you or your company could benefit from this level of quality and consistently give us a try!

Career Showcase At Bristol Plymouth Regional Vocation High School

Vice president of North Easton Machine, Paul Diamond, attended Bristol Plymouth Regional Technical High School's Career Showcase on January 17, 2014. The showcase aims to assist freshman that attend the high school in picking a career path. The event highlights the need to prepare students for the world of work through activities such as guest speakers, workplace tours, job shadows and internships. The Career Showcase is based around a career fair in which freshman students get to walk around the fair asking employers and college students about their businesses and career opportunities.

Paul got the opportunity to talk one on one with students about North Easton Machine and all the opportunities that the machining field has to offer. Students posed questions about salaries, education requirements, and opportunities for growth within the field. To help give students a feel for the products produced at the shop, Paul displayed parts and photographs of products being manufactured. "Bristol Plymouth Tech's Career Day is a great opportunity for us to  capture the attention of freshmen, as they make the decision on which vocational training program to pursue at the high school.  The event gives us the ability to showcase the many challenging, rewarding and successful career paths that these students can pursue in today's high-tech manufacturing market," said Paul Diamond.

On the Job Training Grant Awarded to NEM

North Easton Machine Company has been awarded an OJT Grant by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.  This federally funded program is administered by the state through the One Stop Career Centers, who identify and screen unemployed workers looking for skills training.  Working with CareerWorks in Brockton,  NEM identified and tested qualified candidates.

This program supplements the company's payroll costs for the first eighteen weeks of employment while workers learn job skills.

We have just welcomed our first trainee, John Zinewicz, of Brockton.  Paula Martel, HR Manager at NEM is excited by this opportunity.  "This program is a great fit for NEM.  We need creative solutions to the workforce shortage we are experiencing in our industry.  This is just one tool to meet these challenges head on and grow our own skilled labor force."

News at NEM

We are happy to announce new capital investments to improve and expand our manufacturing  operations:

PartMaker Swiss Cam

PartMaker Swiss Cam is the market leading system for automating the programming of multi-axis Swiss-type CNC lathes. The software employs a patented and easy to learn and use visual approach to programming. The result is a reduction in machine programming and set-up time with optimized cycles. PartMaker creates set-up documentation automatically and interfaces with many CAD systems.

Star SR-20J

We have expanded our Swiss CNC Turning Department with the addition of a new Star SR-20J. This is the second machine of its type to be added to our manufacturing floor. The SR-20J is capable of running up to 20MM bar stock and has a sub and pickoff spindle for simultaneous machining on both ends of the work piece.   There are a variety of tooling configurations allowing as many as 15 cutting tools standard with possibility for many more using optional tooling configurations. Many tools can be power driven allowing for machining of complex components in one operation without need for secondary handling. We have matched this machine with an EDGE Turbo 2-20 automatic bar loader, a high pressure coolant pump (capable of up to 2000PSI), a parts ejector and parts conveyor system. What this means to our valued customers; greater capacity in our ability to manufacture your complex components in one highly efficient and effective process with "lights out" capability for maximum productivity

Community Advisory

Dr. Richard Gross, Superintendent of the Bristol Plymouth Regional Technical School District, spoke at a recent Advisory Board Meeting for Bristol Plymouth Vocational Technical High School in Taunton, MA. He informed the board that there is a trend sweeping the state where academic high schools are adding elective courses in various vocations and touting this as equivalent to the curriculum being offered by local vocational schools.  This is, in his opinion, a politically driven move to sway parents and students, along with the accompanying tax dollars, to their local high school. There is no comparison to the technical skill and industry specific knowledge gained through a comprehensive program in a technical vocational school.  Dr. Gross encouraged anyone who agrees with this position to get involved in discussions with their local political leaders about this trend and its negative impact on the funding of regional vocational programs.
