Getting to Know Ann Caulkins
by Debbie Proffitt

Ann Caulkins is the President and Publisher of the Charlotte Observer. She was name the 2011 Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year. Ann is married with two sons ages 14 and 16. She has been a WIF member since 2010.

Why did you decide to join the Women's Impact Fund?
WIF's emphasis is on philanthropy. It is important for women to fund as a group and put money in what they believe in. It is also important for women to be around other women like them. WIF is a very impressive organization. It is the best place for new women executives to connect in Charlotte.

In a few words or a phrase, how would you describe our members?
Enlightened, smart, invested in our community.

Where did you grow up and how did it shape you?
Shreveport, Louisiana. It shaped me significantly. There was racism and corrupt politics. My parents were not from Shreveport and pointed out the issues...READ MORE
WIF's Welcome Home Celebration
by Melissa Hovey

Women's Impact Fund members enjoyed a fun night recently at the "Welcome Home Celebration" to tour their new home at C3 Lab. There were several exciting events including a hands-on volunteer opportunity with Friendship Trays, a former grantee, to prepare inclement weather food packs for residents in need.

The highlight of the evening was a special musical performance from a talented ensemble of 4th and 5th graders from David Cox Elementary as part of the Musical Minds program. WIF granted Musical Minds
$93,000 in May 2016 for its Musical Arts Program for Elementary Students to engage students from low income neighborhoods in after school musical arts programing designed to promote social change through character education, promoting self-esteem, teamwork, leadership, and social responsibility.

Mary Lynn Baldwin, the program's interim director, commented, "We had the time of our lives. Thank you for the gift of music and the magic of performing!"

Mission Moment: Pat's Place
by Carolyn Meade

In June 2004, the Women's Impact Fund awarded its very first grants as an organization.  One of the grantees chosen was Pat's Place Child Advocacy Center. WIF awarded a startup grant to Pat's Place in the amount of $100,000 to hire a full time case manager and create a support service model for children who had experienced the most serious forms of child abuse. Not only was this WIF's first grant to be awarded, it was transformational for WIF, Pat's Place and, most importantly, for our community.

Pat's Place addresses an acute problem faced by child abuse victims in Charlotte.  Often, children with the courage to talk about the abuse they have suffered must undergo repeated questioning about the most traumatic event in their lives. Pat's Place was established to ensure that all the services a child and family needs (medical examinations, forensic interviewing, and advocacy support) could occur in one location - a safe, nurturing, child-friendly environment - at no cost to a child's family...READ MORE
