It's Time to Register for Wine & Wisdom!
What can those in the arts tell us about the art of leadership?  Plenty, we think, and you're sure to agree after attending this year's Wine & Wisdom.

As the name suggests, this annual WIF event provides both a time to meet and visit with WIF members as well as to learn more about our community. This year's event will be held February 22 at the Charlotte Ballet (701 N. Tryon Street).  Arrive at 6 p.m. to enjoy some social time before the program begins promptly at 6:45.  After the program, members and their prospective member guests are invited to linger longer over coffee.

We have an outstanding panel this year which will be moderated by WIF member Andi Stevenson. They are:
Andi Stevenson, Wine & Wisdom moderator
  • Alisha McMillan Cravotta, director of the Charlotte Ballet Academy
  • Adrienne Dellinger, executive director of Clayworks
  • Devlin McNeil, president and executive director of Community School of the Arts
  • Brenda Tindal, historian at Levine Museum of the New South.
All will share their perspective on leadership - from an arts point of view.

It's time to buy your tickets ($25 each) for this great event. The registration deadline is February 17.  And bring a friend!  Register Now.

How WIF's Grant Making Process Works
About this time every year, the WIF grant-making process moves into full throttle.  We've asked Grants Committee members to share their insights into the process through a series of interviews in sWIFt over the weeks leading up to the May grant award announcement.

W
e're more than halfway through the grant selection process, which began in August when we invited non-profits in the area to submit Letters of Intent. Grants team members reviewed those, of course, but also conducted community research on critical needs and emerging issues.  That research provides needed context for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of ideas presented.
Work teams, built around each of WIF's grant areas - arts, education, environment, health and human services - then went to work.  They selected their top 10, and then narrowed that list to four and invited 20 agencies to submit full proposals.

Now, the work teams are deep into reviewing those proposals, including the budgets, and conducting site visits.  Teams will meet in the weeks ahead to narrow the list to three finalists per area, and then they'll begin preparing the proposal summaries.  The full membership will vote this spring, and grant award winners will be announced in May.

Today we feature Grants Team member Mary Ruth Faulkner, who is new to WIF and the Grants Committee.  In upcoming issues of sWIFt, we'll feature a work team leader as well as a past Grants Committee chair.

All, we hope, will help pull back the curtain on what sometimes seems like a mysterious affair: choosing the right proposals for WIF funding.
An Inside View: Mary Ruth Faulkner
by Kim Cobb
As a relatively new WIF member, I had little understanding of the process WIF uses to fund worthy community partners.  I saw the fruits of WIF's work when I attended our annual meeting last May, but how we got there was a mystery.

Like many others, I'd like to serve on the grants committee, but I worry I won't be able to manage the time commitment or live up to what must be high expectations.  Thinking a fresh recruit would be the best place to start, I sought out a first-timer on the grants committee team to give me the real scoop.  I turned to Mary Ruth Faulkner, newer to WIF than even I.

Mary Ruth does not consider herself the "typical" grants committee member and neither do I after learning several important facts: A physical therapist by training, she left the workforce many years ago to raise her four children, whom she "joyously home-schooled for 7 years."  She chose to serve on the grants committee because she prefers deep dives and being present over daily plate spinning.

"Oh dear," I thought.  I am a self-described lazy coward who prides herself on multi-tasking at every possible moment, and thus could not have less in common with Mary Ruth.  However, as I soon found out, there is a place for everyone at the grants committee table.  Everyone is valued.
