'TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING!
By Mary Gallivan, Board Chair

It is hard to believe it is already December.  We are half way through a fantastic Women's Impact Fund year.  We have welcomed 39 new members since July and have had a series of incredible programming opportunities, thanks to the new Member Engagement Committee led by Chair Pamela Harris-Young and Incoming Chair Christy Durbin.  In addition, our grants process is well under way.

This time of year is also when many focus on their charitable giving.  Just this week we celebrated #GivingTuesdayCLT.

Today's edition of sWIFt includes a great giving article by Incoming Finance Chair Karen Keatley on the benefits of donating shares of stock in lieu of writing a check.  For those of you who have not yet paid your membership dues (hint, hint), this is the perfect way to do so.  In addition, gifts of stock can be a great option for other non-profits you would like to support.  Finally, Development Chair Chris McLeod shares some additional insight into our LEAP Annual Fund and how it is used.

Thanks to each of you for your generous commitment and support of the Women's Impact Fund.

Donating Stock Instead Of Writing a Check

What is the most tax-efficient way to donate to WIF? We know that if you donate by writing a check, your donation is tax deductible. But there's an even better way. By donating appreciated shares in a stock or mutual fund, you can deduct the contribution on your tax return and avoid capital gains taxes on the shares.

Why Give To the LEAP Fund
by Chris McLeod, Development Chair

I invite you to make a difference for the Women's Impact Fund by contributing to the LEAP Annual Fund. (Thank you to those who have already made a gift!) You may wonder why you should contribute over and above your membership dues. Here's how I think about it:
  • As our visibility and reputation continues to rise in our community and across the country (thanks to WCGN), it's important - via the LEAP Fund -- to demonstrate that WIF members understand the resources required to run a nonprofit that now makes nearly $400,000 a year in grants.

Getting To Know Cynthia Frank
by Carolyn Meade

You may not think you know Cynthia Frank - but you've seen her work! Cynthia, a graphic designer, teacher and small business owner by profession http://www.cynthiafrankdesign.com (think logos, branding and invitations), is the designer behind many of the wall poems you'll find painted on the walls of a number of buildings in Charlotte including at Villa Francesca, 325 E. 9th St., Treolar House (across from Imaginon) and once upon a time, on the side of Dixie's Tavern.

The Wall Poems project of Charlotte is the vision of Amy Bagwell and Graham Carew, made possible by a grant from the Knight Foundation, and places snippets of poems by North Carolina poets on blank exterior walls and in other public spaces for all of us to enjoy.

Welcoming New Members
By Katie Hallaway

More than 20 new WIF members gathered for an on-boarding event at Wing Haven Gardens on Nov. 18.  As part of their introduction, new members gave their personal reasons for joining WIF, which included the impact of collective giving, involvement in the community, and diversity of the organization. Several women said they are new to Charlotte, and one said she heard a piece on WFAE about the Women's Collective Giving Grantmakers Network conference held in Charlotte and contacted WIF the next day about membership!

The session provided an overview of WIF history, committee structure and opportunities for involvement, the grants process, and the strategic plan, all in a fun, informative evening.

Welcome new members!
